We need to stop responding to these trolls in here. We all know who they are. You can tell the second you read their comments. If we all stop responding to them, they have no ammo. Every time you respond to them it turns into a elementary school argument and leads to something completely unproductive. They are here to divide us and we are allowing it. This post will be filled with them. So take note of their names and avoid getting into discussions with them because it will lead nowhere. As soon as you start you lose sight of the real reason we are here. Problem resolution. Let's stay on topic and starve these trolls by ignoring them.

I predict Obama will veto it, but then it will pass anyway (because it had a 95% majority in the Congress).
It's sick. Obama will be given the opportunity to veto it as a campaign boost, without needing to be against it at all, for all the executive powers he already has claimed.
I heard one reason Obama wants to veto the bill is because it defines terrorists as "prisoners of war" which means he would have to obey the Geneva Convention rules (no torture, no indefinite detainment in Guantanamo, et cetera). By vetoing the law he can ignore the convention rules and treat the terrorists any way he desires.

Well, I don't think we've been following the Geneva Convention too well, anyway. Neither do I believe that the Senate, with this bill, is doing very well keeping their oaths of office. It's times like this where I wish the 17th Amendment had never been ratified.
That's the point. Currently we don't have to follow the Convention because the terrorists are not considered POWs. But under this new law they receive that new label which forces the president to obey the anti-torture privisions of the convention. (And that's why he wants to veto it.)
I'm not sure if I am on the troll list yet, but I think Thrasymaque makes a reasonable point. There are excellent ideas proposed by various people on these threads, and some achievable goals. But it is hard to filter out the dross (the truthers, the anti-semites, various other conspiracy theorists, etc.). That was also my experience when I visited Zuccotti Park several times in October - some bright people with great ideas, some kooky people, and some frankly scary folks. Maybe it is like Mark Twain said when he was informed that it takes all kinds to make a world: "it doesn't take all kinds, but there are all kinds."
It would be nice if this forum were subdivided in some way, to make it easier for people to converse about the topics that interest them. But I suppose you get what you pay for.

Conspiracy theorists and anti-semites are not welcomed on this forum. This is clear in the forum rules. What these people don't understand is that the forum has rules to limit off-topic posts. They believe their freedom of speech trumps these forum rules. They don't realize that all forums of discussions have rules to keep discussions on topic. If we were to post unrelated material to flood their conspiracy forums, conspiracy theorists would ban us in a second. If they want to contravene the forums rules by crying for total freedom of speech, then they must also accept my freedom of speech. And, sometimes, I speak with images. Like you said, these peoples' posts are dross. At least now you'll find a couple of interesting cartoons if you go on their pages.
I'm working on some code for this site which will let you ignore the posts and comments of users you have on your ignore list. When that's done, it will be easy to hide their nonsense. For good measure, I'm going to add some code so that known conspiracy theorists can be put on a site wide watch list. That will make it easy to ignore all these guys at the click of a button.
There should be a way to click on a user's profile and see every comment they ever posted. That is how other forums I've seen are run and it would make way more sense for this one. It seems simple enough. Is anyone even running this thing?
Are you a programmer? If so, go ahead and code it. The forum is open-source software. That would be an excellent feature.
I have no idea how to do any of that. I know nothing about computers really. I had to use google just to figure out how to open my computer tower and get the dust out.
Somebody should do it though and while they are at it they should find a way to organize the topics. So much good dialogue gets lost in the troll mess.
