Forum Post: South Korea = NAFTA

The biggest free trade act since NAFTA is about to go through. And we are all sitting here letting it because we are distracted by OWS. If we really care about the economy we would not allow this. Our media is so good at not telling us what is really going on in the world. Do something or perish.

What's wrong with NAFTA? I'm genuinely curious. Please, no trolling.

I was a disappointed that the article didn't talk much about Canada and/or Mexico. After all, they are the two countries which take part in NAFTA with US. Do you have links with more details about NAFTA in particular?

NAFTA, and other “free trade” agreements, favor the foreign producers. We are told by the WTO and the EU that we cannot and should not protect our own economy. Through “free trade” the U.S. must open itself to all foreign interests.

It would have been nice to read an article that explains in more detail why Canada and Mexico are favored over US in the NAFTA agreement. It seems to me that with free trade all countries open themselves up to foreign interest, not only US. In that sense, I don't see why US would have a particular disadvantage.

I would encourage to investigate the general global trend toward "neoliberalism" 0f which free trade and labor arbitrage is a major element. Starting with the wiki article is a good idea if you are unfamiliar with that term. Naomi Klein is very insightful on this subject. Here is a link pertaining to NAFTAs effects on Canada and Mexico. The answer to your last point; all countries open themselves up....indeed they do. Many countries have been damaged as a result. http://everything2.com/title/NAFTA+and+social+sustainability+in+Canada+and+Mexicohttp://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2001/apr/19/globalisation.comment
