An idea worth testing for off-the-grid winter cooking is solar ovens. They work on sunny and lightly cloudy days, regardless of outdoor air temperature. You don't need a generator or anything.
Occupations located in sunny but cold areas, like Denver, should totally get a solar oven to cook-up some hot soup. And, places like NYC should get one to test out. As long as there's sun, they work.
