Is it not the most perfect time to call for a complete solar energy revolution? (solar energy here meaning all renewable energy supplies: PV, solar thermal, geo thermal, biofuel from sustainable forestry, wind, and small hydro). It has the potential to solve every dilemma we face. Please see the late Hermann Scheer's book "A Solar Manifesto" and several others: http://www.hermannscheer.de/en/index.php?option=com_content&task=blogcategory&id=5&Itemid=7 Decentralisation and democratisation of energy is of the highest importance: Let us make that demand today and our generation will forever be known as the ones who awoke.

Of course transportation will use fossil resources right now. And I'm not sure you read correctly, I advocated only for biofuel from sustainable sources (for instance wood pellets from bamboo).
Transporting the panels is okay since once panels, wind turbines, small hydro are set up, they require no more sourcing of energy. In effect it is the only way to OWN energy, whereas presently we all RENT energy.
As you mentioned we may be at peak oil, so logically if you don't begin acting now to install renewable sources, what will remain of the last sources of energy? Do you accept that they burn into the air and leave us with nothing?
Your negative outlook is probably underscored by conditioning you've had since birth that shows this feat is impossible. It is not and in fact many cities are already 100% renewable energy driven: 2 in Austria, 2 in Germany, 3 in Denmark, 1 in China, 1 in Italy...
Or keep on buying into media and corrupt science telling us it is impossible. Understand these people are owned and operated by the same people you are presently fighting against.
Don't fool yourself: vast amounts of fossil fuels are used to produce and transport panels, which is quite problematic, considering that we are at peak oil. Solutions using plant material compete with food or clothing production.
It is great, but nowhere near what is required. What is required is a complete dismantling of the present centralized, authoritarian, ologopolist energy system prevailing in the US and through the world.
It is a wonder how such an imposition on democratic rights has been so often overlooked, even though energy in its purest form, as food energy, is considered a basic human right. But even food energy in the US has systematically been hijacked by major corporations. Free the energy and pave the way for all the changes that is the final resolute fact.
Look what they're doing over in Jersey -
