Forum Post: Silencing John Lewis-WTF?

Should OWS be silencing people who sacrificed and gave for the Civil Rights Movement. John Lewis was not allowed to speak at the OWS agenda meeting in NYC! Silenced by the rules of consensus and the Human Microphone! National TV...Embarassing. He came in humility and sat quietly...waiting to add his voice to the movement. He was shown rigidity and creepshow consensus rules that serve to alienate him and anyone like me who thought they may have had a place here. I still hold out the hope that I am not alone on this site in thinking this. To be honest I was already about to run when I heard the human microphone on the video clips I've seen. WTF?!!!? Are we all in together or are we lost in the self obsessed pendantry of who is no more important than anyone else. If you haven't seen the clip of him being silenced...don't respond to my post.

John Lewis has been part of the 1% for a long time.

Now he wants to dictate to the movement.

Fuck that.

Well done, Occupy Atlanta. John Lewis, no doubt, hoped to come and make the movement about his extremely partisan agenda. To bad, so sad. John Lewis is part of the problem.

Because it was feared that he might try to influence this movement..he should not be heard?

They said he could speak when they were they finished the agenda. He chose not to.

He did nothing other than wish to speak, when he wasn't allowed to he didn't complain. He simply left. What lacked humility in that. How is his proposal to speak lacking humility? Most of the people there wanted to hear him. Not a consensus...but most. How is what he did any different than any one else's proposal?

Is the point of protest narcissism? Or is it to be heard? For all of us to be able to add our voices together? What is the point of a "MOVEMENT"? Where are we going if we are not trying to add more voices to that movement? We don't have to agree with all of the points of view any of us may have, but we can't allow the structure of a movement to undermine these goals. This action stood in the way of all that. Is there a purity test for admission or are the rules of conduct too inflexible?

He could have spoken when it was his turn. He was the one too stubborn to repeat what he was going to say because he was interrupted while he was interrupting.

I thought the human mike and the look on the face of John Lewis were the 2 best things all day! I might have to watch it again...
