Forum Post: Should we require in person sign-up for posting?

Posted 13 years ago on Oct. 20, 2011, 12:15 a.m. EST by StevenRoyal (490) from Dania Beach, FL

One way to get people to know our movement better might be to require them to sign-up in person at one of our numerous occupations nationwide in order to post on this board. That way they can see the movement for themselves and not just rely on the media for information. We don't need to take down their name or even their e-mail address if they don't want to provide it. We could just activate their requested available username at one of the occupations and the first time they log-on they would choose their password. Thoughts?

no... i've never been to one of the sites, not sure i ever will... i post some on this board... restricting posts as you described would only result in an echo chamber instead of the voices of the 99%

[-] 1 points by StevenRoyal (490) from Dania Beach, FL 13 years ago

I certainly don't want an echo chamber. That is not the result I was thinking about.

Be one voice with the Dirt Bagger Party.

Greetings,

Not everybody relies on the media for their information gathering :-) Some of us have other sources to garner the important information without the entertainment value the media seems to insist we partake of.

Hoops jumping is not everyone's favorite pastime and requiring games like the Olympics to voice your opinion or to offer one's help and support IMHO, is not a great start.

It's obvious some right wing site recruited these yahoos to mess with our democratic rights, since they are too cowardly to let democracy flourish. If they thought our ideas were wacky, wouldn't they then just fall apart on their own? Obviously there is intense fear that this may lead to something.

[-] 1 points by RainyFloaty (11) 13 years ago

NO, it cuts people off who can not get to an occupy area, and otherwise forces them to do something in order to be included. That is NOT what democracy is about. Little, seemingly harmless, acts like that can and do have a major effect. The movement is both online and in person. People should ALL be included REGARDLESS and should not have to jump through hoops or do something someone else wants them to do just to have a voice. (Whether or not the other party believes they are doing them good.) It's unfair and it shuts people out, especially since the movements are more accessible to some than others.

The perverse morals of wall street is no longer acceptable by THE PEOPLE.

[-] 1 points by eidos (285) 13 years ago

Since I last stepped back, I have to say enough of the "Forum" headlines are junk, (I mean meant to be junk, not junk based on whether I agree or not with the headline) to make you wonder if you should require people to come in to sign up. I'm starting to see why you feel the way you do.

[-] 1 points by cristinasupes (145) 13 years ago

I don't think so because there are many supporters of the movement who do not live near a site. In addition, there could be trolls that come sign up in person. And finally, if we restrict then we are going against what we stand for - which is the right of free speech. I don't agree with everything posted on these boards and there are some people that aren't acting very nice but we have to respect everyone's right to speak up whether they agree or not.

[-] 1 points by jomojo (562) 13 years ago

google occupy wall street forum (add your topic)

It helps you find subjects that are lost in the maize.

[-] 1 points by MiMi1026 (937) from Springfield, VA 13 years ago

Not a good idea. Many people are unable to make to the protest sites, due to employment, family responsibilities illness, disability, distance , or lack of convient transportation. No. Let this site stay as it it,so all can contribute their ideas or thoughts...positive or negative.

[-] 1 points by gawdoftruth (3698) from Santa Barbara, CA 13 years ago

i am comfortable calling it like i see it. i do think that some people are trolls and must be dealt with as such. I think over all a better solution would be to have 1001 sub forums and one of those for trolls, and move troll posts to the troll forum. its only been 3 weeks since i asked for and was promised sub forums so my assumption at this point is that this site is a con scam and never had any intention of organizing to support OWS but instead was always just giving trolls their forum.

i don't expect anything to change on this site because it hasn't in three weeks changed despite promises. over all this site is a net loss and in the end i assume due to the incompetence of the admin team people will vacate and leave the place to the trolls.

[-] 1 points by TechJunkie (3029) from Miami Beach, FL 13 years ago

The forum is a "con scam" too, because the changes that you wanted weren't implemented?

Fascinating.

[-] 1 points by gawdoftruth (3698) from Santa Barbara, CA 13 years ago

its an infinite zero sum game. i think its quite fair to assume given the full need and obviious neccesity and the promises that were made and then broken. You learn to look for other details. No, its not because the changes i wanted were not implemented. its 20 thins most people are too slow to notice. like chat admins that are abusive and promises that were made which make no sense.

So you can spin and attack all you lke but...

inobvious troll is more obvious.

[-] 1 points by TechJunkie (3029) from Miami Beach, FL 13 years ago

But what does, "con scam", mean? You suspect that this site was constructed in por faith?

[-] 1 points by gawdoftruth (3698) from Santa Barbara, CA 13 years ago

obviously its constructed in bad faith. obviously. obviously the admins in chat are abusive. obviously there are not sub forums. obviously this site is not directly connected to OWS. Lacking a simple forum structure, OWS accidentally herded everyone over here.

Obviously 3 weeks gone by no sub forums after being promised them and the enormous noise we have which shows we need those sub forums- tells me- pretty absolutely- that there was never an intention to facilitate conversation here- but instead to waste everyones time.

[-] 1 points by TechJunkie (3029) from Miami Beach, FL 13 years ago

And so it's obvious to anybody who is sufficiently intelligent that the admins of this site are part of a conspiracy to counter the movement?

[-] 1 points by gawdoftruth (3698) from Santa Barbara, CA 13 years ago

no, not counter the movement, create it astroturf it and use it to counter itself by denying it organization required for its survival.

[-] 1 points by TechJunkie (3029) from Miami Beach, FL 13 years ago

And I must also be part of this same conspiracy too, right? Because I tend to not agree with you?

[-] 1 points by gawdoftruth (3698) from Santa Barbara, CA 13 years ago

no, your just a troll. again trying to spin and lie about what i actually think with a stupid leading question.

[-] 1 points by TechJunkie (3029) from Miami Beach, FL 13 years ago

As opposed to the other leading questions before that, which weren't stupid?

Funny thing about extremists: they always see the world in absolutes. You're either with them or you're against them. Paranoid extremists are the same, except that you're either with them or you're part of the vast, shadowy conspiracy against them.

[-] 1 points by gawdoftruth (3698) from Santa Barbara, CA 13 years ago

no, all your leading questions are stupid standard trolling tactics.

[-] 1 points by eidos (285) 13 years ago

well, I have been there and I am posting here. I can't occupy overnight but I join in.

I guess I don't see what the goal is. How will it change the quality of the board? Only supporters would then post? Or fewer will post? Definitely fewer will post, if that is the goal. Can you identify particular posts that you think would have been prevented by that method?

[-] 1 points by StevenRoyal (490) from Dania Beach, FL 13 years ago

Anyone would be able to post, you don't have to join the movement to post, just come in person and see for yourself without the slanted media getting in the way.

[-] 1 points by MiMi1026 (937) from Springfield, VA 13 years ago

You don't get it!! Not everyone can make it to the protests. They have jobs, families. Some are disabled. Some live to far away. This is the only way Many People can support OccupyWallstreet/OccupyTogether!

No. You idea is Not Good. It really sucks bad.

[-] 1 points by eidos (285) 13 years ago

absolutely a laudable goal, getting people to come out. I can not occupy overnight but have joined during the day. It will cut down on posts though and people should come out in support or to learn more about it. For that reason, not posting privileges.

Who knows, You can raise it in a general assembly and see if it flies. I am not personally that passionate either way on it as a way to post. I am big on getting more people to come in person though. It's essential to the movement.

[-] 1 points by TTTTT (66) 13 years ago

Sifting through the trolls does get old sometimes, we could set up a mirror image of this board requiring this and simply call it the OWS troll free board, along with an explanation as to why their is two boards for new visitors.

[-] 1 points by eidos (285) 13 years ago

Honestly, the trolling is not that much. There was some annoying person who posted then same 420 add like 25 times on a forum post. Then there are those opposed to the movement not engaging in very serious dialogue, more baiting. But really there have been quite few trolls.

[-] 1 points by dankpoet (425) 13 years ago

effectively that board is becoming www.themultitude.org

[-] 1 points by sudoname (1001) from Berkeley, CA 13 years ago

This forum is intended to be anonymous. If you want more accountability, there are places like facebook and especially google plus, which attempt to only allow real people.

I think it's more about reputation. People should have their date registered more visible on their posts.

[-] 1 points by dellcomp (6) 13 years ago

nice idea, I've been down at Zucotti park to visit friends and lend support and some people come in pretending to be a friend of OWS but are not. On guy suggested that we end all public schools while he donated books (probably shit he could sell at the strand bookstore) to OWS.

[-] 1 points by gawdoftruth (3698) from Santa Barbara, CA 13 years ago

i think this is a very good idea, we should make them pass a basic litmus test and be present for 48 hours with an occupy.

[-] 1 points by StevenRoyal (490) from Dania Beach, FL 13 years ago

I wasn't thinking of them passing any test; I really don't think that would be a good idea. I figure just give them to opportunity to show up to an occupation and see for themselves. If they don't like; so be it. Maybe they can give some advice on how to improve the occupation to make it better. I figure, the more people, even the skeptical ones. who show up and share their ideas, the better off everyone will be.

[-] 1 points by gawdoftruth (3698) from Santa Barbara, CA 13 years ago

i think that the obvious thing after shwing up is demonstrating that they are actually awake enough to participate on line. otherwise we get lines of trolls signing up to troll us. However you imagine that working... i imagine it being a matter of seeing them active in the group discussions and getting a sense that they are awake and with it. trolls out number us 5 to one on this forum nowadays- that will only get worse before it gets better.

[-] 1 points by StevenRoyal (490) from Dania Beach, FL 13 years ago

We can call some people trolls who we don't agree with or who seem to be just making negative remarks or we can invite them to come of an occupation. They might or might not have a lot to contribute. They might or might not agree or enjoy their time at the occupation.

[-] 1 points by gawdoftruth (3698) from Santa Barbara, CA 13 years ago

some fraction will be converted. some fraction will remain trolls. we need to sort them, the internet is not the place to do that. face to face conversations put the troll back in reality and put the situation back in reality and removes the false courage so many trolls have due to the internet making it possible for them to be bullies. We need to think about how to convert who can be and how to use live diplomacy in person to do that and then what to do with the trolls who are not convertible.

[-] 1 points by StevenRoyal (490) from Dania Beach, FL 13 years ago

I'm not comfortable with calling someone a troll but I am certainly comfortable with having people decide for themselves about this movement. I figure too many people are getting slanted information from the media and the best way to fix this is to encourage people to see for themselves and make up their own minds based on their own experiences. Since so many people like to post on this board, I figured requiring people to sign up to post with no strings attached in person might be a way to achieve this.

[-] 1 points by gawdoftruth (3698) from Santa Barbara, CA 13 years ago

[-] 1 points by eidos (285) 13 years ago

Oh, I see. I just scrolled down and saw your argument with the user "libtard" etc. Well, don't be a mole person. This stuff is not important at all. OWS is being mentioned in more and more hearings on Capitol Hill, in serious congressional economic hearings. We are drawing support from within WS even. The movement is sailing in the polls at the moment. A big percentage of Americans support the movement. Battling with every taunter is not your goal. They will either give it a fair shake and accept your invitation to come see for themselves or they won't. It is silly to talk of kicking them out and creating troll dungeons online. Especially when their numbers, really, are quite low

[-] 1 points by gawdoftruth (3698) from Santa Barbara, CA 13 years ago

they out number sincere posters here, and that is a problem which will only increase.

battling with every taunter is not my goal. taking my fair share of the work load and letting other people deal with their fair share is my goal. I take down 20 or 50 trolls a day, and remind people or warn people that the less obvious trolls like collegesportsrivalry are trolls. I do my work, i step back out. Over all people get to see how that goes and learn from my example. And they do learn from my example, and they do pm me to thank me, and they do go on to deal with the trolls as i have shown how.

[-] 1 points by eidos (285) 13 years ago

What do you mean take down? Remove the posts as administrator or confront them in a comment?

Really, honestly, enough. You need to take a break. Seriously. If you are in NY go over to the tenth street baths, soak, steam, get a massage, and get a bed for the night with friends or at home.

You are doing too much and need a break. Seriously.

[-] 1 points by gawdoftruth (3698) from Santa Barbara, CA 13 years ago

i mean win vs them in argume and show them to be trolls.

seriously, i'm not doing enough work the movement would do well to replicate me for 100 clones.

[-] 1 points by eidos (285) 13 years ago

OK, but conserve yourself. You remind me of me when I got seriously burned out on a prolonged civil rights campaign. A feather bed, a long soak. A night off. Don't knock it.

Ounce of prevention worth a pound of cure.

[-] 1 points by eidos (285) 13 years ago

Sheesh. There really aren't that many "trolls" There was guy who posted an ad like 25 times in one post and there are some opposed to the movement who engage in conversations that aren't that sinere. That is not trolling. The "420" ad was the only thing I would call trolling. I have been amazed actually at how much sincere debate there has been and it has left a really good impression of this movement. Maybe I am missing something but I would like you to point out the posts that are going to be moved to sub forums.

A con scam? I don't get it. And who is making promises. I don't get that either.

[-] 1 points by gawdoftruth (3698) from Santa Barbara, CA 13 years ago

i have studied psychology and formal conversational logic and have a window into whats going on with people a bit like looking down at an ant hill. Flagging troll posts has gone on and generally we just label trolling posts as such "obvious troll is obvious." The forum is full of trolls. Some of them are increasingly harder for muggles to spot because they sound like they are just arguing. I can flag posts for you i suppose, but that seems like a strange game where i run around whack a mole style for days to show you. And yes. This entire forum is a con scam, it was put up probably to give trolls a forum to troll. If you imagine differently then you don't understand net ergonomics, why 1001 sub forums were a critical emergency 3 weeks ago and why and how things could be handled via smart programs and collaboration tools. "Jart" is the one making promises- the promise was made that sub forums were coming. 3 weeks ago.

its quite clear 3 weeks later; there are no sub forums. there is no wiki. and as predicted this forum has become a trollhatten.

more importantly the useful information and dialogue is impossible to organize, find, or relate to, and the scrawl will mean almost nobody will even read a full page of threads.

[-] 1 points by eidos (285) 13 years ago

I can fend for myself just fine. I don't need anyone IDing anyone for me. I have found and engaged in dozens of interesting conversations and have no problem finding the useful informative dialogues.

If all you look for are crappy posts then that is all you will see. I had a fabulous discussion on this board tonight about neoliberal reforms, trade regulations, laissez faire economics, pulling money out of big banks, pulling money out of stocks, campaign finance reform and really, the trade discussion was amazingly in depth and helpful. there were great people contributing. I really never got distracted.

It's easy to get burnt out and lose sight of the big picture. This movement is a success so far. The media establishment is not in good shape these days, but the message is getting out nevertheless.

Getting more people to actually come in person is an important goal, but don't get the idea that until Rupert Murdoch starts saying good things on Fox or in the NY Post the movement is a failure.

If anything, the movement is exposing him to average Americans more and more for what he truly is.

It is very easy to get burnt out and we all do. Breaks are essential to get perspective.

[-] 1 points by gawdoftruth (3698) from Santa Barbara, CA 13 years ago

i am glad that things are working out well for you here. keep up the good work, and keep things positive.

[-] 1 points by eidos (285) 13 years ago

Definitely. And pace ourselves. It's the long haul.

[-] -1 points by NYprotester (80) 13 years ago

Finally a good idea. As a proud Dirt Bagger Party member I'll man/women a sign up desk in the park.

[-] -2 points by ArrestAllCEOS (115) 13 years ago

I thought we were all equal and welcome? This sounds like tyranny

[-] 1 points by StevenRoyal (490) from Dania Beach, FL 13 years ago

What exactly is tyrannical about it?

[-] 1 points by StevenRoyal (490) from Dania Beach, FL 13 years ago

Narrative? If tyranny is their (these so-called trolls you are referring to) narrative let them have it. There is nothing tyrannical about this movement. If people would go to an occupation, they would see for themselves.

[-] 1 points by MiMi1026 (937) from Springfield, VA 13 years ago

Not everyone can make it. Ive been to a few protest..but I live to far away. I got work, family and resposibilities. Most times I show my support for #ows here as do many others.

[-] 0 points by Hellomynameis (243) from Aptos, CA 13 years ago

it's tyranny because that is the narrative that repeats itself in their head.... don't feed the trolls!
