Anthropologists can attest to the power of shaming in cultures, all the way back to life in the Cave. Shouting "Shame" during incidents of police brutality is effective. It would also be effective to post the face and name of the officer (and his actions) in a "Gallery of Shame: Heroes of the 1%" dedicated to those officers who choose to represent the 1% by beating, macing, punching, etc., the non-violent protesters. Their friend's and neighbor's judgement of them is much more potent than a system-rigged courtroom.Likewise, thanking and honoring those police officers who carry out their duties responsibly (as was done by the crowd in Seattle recently) is also important. We need to help shape their behavior, and help them understand it is their friends and neighbors who they are policing, so how they police is important.
Let me know how I can help
I have yet to see vids/pics of cops stopping their violent behavior/actions onto others when the crowd starts repeatedly saying "SHAME!"
Please explain HOW shouting "SHAME" is - as you put it - "effective".
It is behaviorally specific feedback! It names the behavior for what it is, for those who are acting it out, and for those who witness it.
