It seems to me that the spirits of the four students killed by police at the Kent State protests a generation ago, back in 1970, are hovering over us these days.Could it happen again? Yes, in a heartbeat.

The students killed at Kent State were not shot by the police (as the original poster mistakenly said), but by members of the Ohio National Guard.

I believe they were killed by Ohio's own National Guard weren't they? As students put flowers in ends of guns held by these soldiers. They had photographers then and tv cameras. The OWS participants are just as passionate about the many causes we support today as those kids were about stopping the war in Viet Nam.

There were no flowers in the guns at Kent State. Go read all about it on Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kent_State_shootings

I have found myself wishing those cell phone videos had been available then. Kent State was a partying school - far from a political hotbed. I've always wondered what really happened there, and suspected that it was even more ridiculous than we were told.

At least U Cal is taking the police actions seriously, apparently. Stay tuned....
