JERUSALEM (AP) — One of Israel's chief rabbis ventured into the divisive question of gender segregation on Monday, saying separate seating for men and women on buses and similar practices adopted by some devout Jews are not required by Jewish law.

Your title is misleading, as the article itself pretty much states that the majority of Israelis want no more part of this crap than mainstream Muslims want their fundamentalists setting the tone or than most mainstream Americans want the Westboro Baptists dictating cultural standards. I applaud Rabbi Amar's decision to speak out condemning the practice and hope that more like him will speak out for a more moderate Israel.
