According to some articles I've read (which obviously may or may not be right) the estimate is something like 2 billion. Which works out to be about $1000 if you could get 2 million to donate and it would abolish student loan debt. Now what if it went a little higher, what if it was a pledge to donate your entire tax return this year to this goal? I don't rely on my tax return every year, it's usually a nice thing to get but I'm not going to break the bank if I didn't get it.
Rolling Jubilee is an awesome idea, it sparked this idea that I think is bigger and could/would make a huge difference in the every day lives of many people. I'm not sure where to begin with this idea, how to get the word out or how to make it get traction. How could this get started?
Feel free to send me any private messages if you want to discuss this further. Thank You, Tim
'Rolling Jubilee is an awesome idea' - YES! Great post on a very important matter but why discuss in 'private message', lol? The first ever private message that I recieved was from a clear racist (described Obama as 'dumb knee grow!), so be careful what you wish for! Thank you for this post.
I figured this would involve communication outside of the computer to get done and I didn't want my personal information available in public.
a) "College Conspiracy" - Indentured for life (Video)
"College education is the largest scam in U.S. history !"
b) "Student loans : Even military worries about rising debt" :
"Student loans come with protections for US troops, but loan companies seem to be misleading them, a new Pentagon report says. Student loans, held by 41 percent of troops, are among their top concerns."
radix omnium malorum est cupiditas ...
'Rolling Jubilee for Student Loans' is a very important idea and I hope you share any thoughts and links with us here hopefully without compromising your own 'personal information'. Never Give Up! Go Occupy!
I have been campaigning locally to stimulate the economy of my community. Grass roots is the key to getting the word out about our cause.
My plan is to start local, then hit the state circuit, then collectively we make an impact nationally.
I saw a portion of that Telethon. This is a GREAT concept. Can it be applied to things other than student debt?
I wouldn't see why this couldn't be applied elsewhere. I remember when Occupy Wall St was happening there were alot of signs about student loan debt but asking about federal relief for such efforts. I think that this is a solution that wouldn't involve the government at all and hopefully get positive press all around. I don't know how it could be spun as a negative. I'm thinking with the donation of your tax return you send in a copy of your student loan debt. The donations are put in a large pool and the bills are paid from the pool. What do you all think?
I do believe I heard them say at the end of the program - that last nights effort would target medical debt.
Do you know if there's a plan to continue this great idea?
They also said last night that national strike debt groups would be forming. I do believe that the jubilee is still taking donations as well.
That's fantastic. If I had some disposable right now, I'd be donating some as we speak. Hopefully the situation will change soon. It was, ahem, put on hold this September.
Even just spreading the word is a gr8 contribution. {:-])
That I am doing. Not everyone is receptive, but hey, ya gotta keep plugging away.
Sometimes what you say may bounce off ( or at least appear to ) only to be picked-up and considered at a later point in time.
