desperation is definitely sinking in.

[-] -2 points by factsrfun (8342) from Phoenix, AZ 12 years ago

yea we passed it 1998, but the Chamber and GOP have been wacking at it ever since.

[-] 1 points by Progression (143) 12 years ago

Politicians don't like the "agree not to accept money from special-interest groups" clause of the Clean Elections bill.

[-] -2 points by factsrfun (8342) from Phoenix, AZ 12 years ago

The Repubilcans in my state don't like any of the Clean Elections bill, we do have a number of Dems who like it though.

[-] 1 points by ARod1993 (2420) 12 years ago

You've got to be shitting me. Tucson's Clean Elections program makes the city one of the few places in the country where you actually have to win your office rather than outright buying it, especially on the heels of Citizens United. Basically, a strict version of that bill ($5 donation cap, individuals only, and a lump sum to start off) is the sort of thing that we should be looking to institute on a national level if we're serious about campaign finance form.

[-] -1 points by factsrfun (8342) from Phoenix, AZ 12 years ago

I wish I were dude, we just got to make sure we vote this down in Nov.

[-] 1 points by HitGirl (2263) 12 years ago

SCR 1021 changes the state Constitution to prohibit the state or any local government from giving any public funds to candidates running for public office or giving a tax credit to individuals who donate to programs that fund candidates...

How backward can you get? I honestly hope people are smarter than that in Arizona. SCR 1021 basically says only rich people or corporate puppets may run for office. Sick.

[-] -2 points by factsrfun (8342) from Phoenix, AZ 12 years ago

Yeah we've had public finance for state offices since 1998, in 2010 the Robert's Court cut back on our rights with this dicesion:

http://www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/10pdf/10-238.pdf

The Chamber of Commerce and the GOP have been trying to get rid of it every since. They hate it when people can run for office without owing something to a rich person., think I just said this to friday so I am aware....

[-] 2 points by HitGirl (2263) 12 years ago

Yeah, I read about that decision. It was worse than citizens united because it attacked public financing. How can you say yes to corporate money and no to the peoples' money? That cannot be constitutional. Really shows the rotting corruption of our Supreme Court.

[-] -1 points by factsrfun (8342) from Phoenix, AZ 12 years ago

I know I couldn't believe it they said the people of the state of AZ had no right to match a rich guy dollar for dollar if he tries to buy our state house. Of course with C.U. now a corporation can buy our elections, so does that mean the utillity can spend a million bucks buying our comporation commission, here in AZ they don't have to it's already all GOP and they get whatever they want. but in theory.

[-] 2 points by HitGirl (2263) 12 years ago

Hard to believe our democracy depends on a few judge appointments. Elections have consequences. Maye if Obama gets another term this will all change.

[-] -1 points by factsrfun (8342) from Phoenix, AZ 12 years ago

In truth two things have to happen, Obama has to win, and the left has got to stop thinking meeting them halfway is compromise, that's surrender, they just move further right and the dems keep following, trying to govern. When they step right we have to step left, the dems are afraid to step as far left as the R’s are right for fear of looking like the strawman the Rs are always building. This comes about because the Rs have framed the debate, most believe the left just isn’t as good at it, I think it’s deeper than that, the dirty truth is we can’t all have the American dream, esp. with that dream getting bigger and bigger, so they don’t know how to deal with this.

Something came to me last night, a thought about our problem being we think of ourselves (the USA) as being too big, we think we are big, it’s important to us to be big. If we were small like Finland we would feel more like we were all in this together. I get it now, just got to figure out how to say it, and then try to tell somebody......

[-] 2 points by HitGirl (2263) 12 years ago

Keep in mind we could rule this country just by deciding what not to buy and pooling our money for meaningful things if we had that kind of unity. We wouldn't even need a violent revolution.

[-] -2 points by factsrfun (8342) from Phoenix, AZ 12 years ago

but we would get hungry, hey I read C.R. i figure it's my duty to buy the best, it's like my contribution to keeping the system honest, but I do buy where when it helps the good guys but I don't think we can win this only that way, without actually putting some people out of office only then will they listen.

[-] 2 points by HitGirl (2263) 12 years ago

You have too much faith in the Dems. Some of them are actually playing you. Their interests lie with big money too, so they pretend to be weak. Well...they actually are weak and most are politicians only. But progressive Dems are growing. I agree that America is so big that it's hard to get people to unite around (or even recognize) issues that are important to them, and the capitalists just take advantage wherever they can, dividing us whenever possible. Keep on working on what you need to say. Words can make a difference.

[-] -2 points by factsrfun (8342) from Phoenix, AZ 12 years ago

not sure where you getting that I have that much faith in the D's, I do think that there are no R's worth keeping, so the only effective way to get rid of them is by replacing them with a D in most cases. I think that if we trun R's out in huge numbers then everybody left will want to hear everything we got to say. I think to have an impact we have to pick one or the other, otherwise we have no impact and it becomes OWS who? I think picking the R's would be crazy they make everything we want to do harder, so I guess that's why I'm a yellow dog.

[-] 1 points by HitGirl (2263) 12 years ago

Well, it makes sense anyway.

[-] -2 points by factsrfun (8342) from Phoenix, AZ 12 years ago

The actions bring the media, we say “get the money out of politics and address wealth inequality” and every time someone hears it, we gain a little ground. We take them out that fight against us at the polls. We keep driving home the message. With grass roots like OWS has we can even watch the state houses after elections to see who is just pretending and get rid of them too. Those state seats can be taken down just ask the guy who wrote SB 1070, he was state senate leader first time one of those had ever been recalled. ALEC works through the state houses, uf we don’t make them pay, they won’t listen to us.

[-] 1 points by GirlFriday (17435) 12 years ago

Their time is running out in AZ and they know it.

[-] -2 points by factsrfun (8342) from Phoenix, AZ 12 years ago

The SC hurt it in 2010. but they can't stand any chance of truth getting out, nobody gets to run unless they owe something to a rich guy.

http://www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/10pdf/10-238.pdf

[-] 0 points by GirlFriday (17435) 12 years ago

That's pretty much the size of it.

[-] -2 points by factsrfun (8342) from Phoenix, AZ 12 years ago

I hope this wakes people up to those that come on here saying repubilcans can be trusted to work with us to "get the money out".

[-] 0 points by GirlFriday (17435) 12 years ago

Not at it's current stage. Hell no.

[-] -2 points by factsrfun (8342) from Phoenix, AZ 12 years ago

They are just running scared because people are waking up to who they really work for.

[-] 0 points by GirlFriday (17435) 12 years ago

I'm not so sure they even realize that much.

[-] -2 points by factsrfun (8342) from Phoenix, AZ 12 years ago

I'm old with medical issiues (so don't carry signs as much as I once did), but reading on the front page about all the actions today, (not seeing any coverage on the 24/7's though), looks like there is more support now than even the fall, one thing the TEA party did was tie their thing to the race so it got covered together, I like going for the big tent, we'll see how much movement gets done today, but it looks like the people are out there

[-] 0 points by GirlFriday (17435) 12 years ago

Are you in AZ?

I think there is more support. There are protests all over the country. Many people cannot leave their jobs or homes. I think this summer it is going to pick up as well.

[-] -2 points by factsrfun (8342) from Phoenix, AZ 12 years ago

Yes we are luckily through winter but the summer is coming, the plaza is 120 in the summer. We are not occupying the plaza now, but planned demonstrations, being in the west we have direct democracy and the people pass better laws than the legislators; they pass 1070 we pass MMJ the problem here is that everybody votes Rep, because it "feels" good and they are "fans" then they hate what these guys do, go figure.

[-] -1 points by Perspective (-243) 12 years ago

Dude,I hate to be the one but,do you honestly think ANY politician isn't in it for the money? Obama is the biggest Wall St shill EVER. Until people get so disgusted with things that a 3rd part actually becomes viable things will not change.OWS is merely a pawn of the left which is really sad. See while I'm a conservative Republican there ARE actually things that OWS and I see the same way. Mainly that all campaigns should be publicly funded and(I feel) that the amount of funding should be based on the position being run for. Anyway,as I said, until a 3rd party becomes viable we will always be forced to choose between the lesser of two evils in our eyes.

[-] -1 points by factsrfun (8342) from Phoenix, AZ 12 years ago

I know that ALL the dems voted to keep public financing and ALL the R's voted to kill it, so you can pretend they are all the same, but it is just pretend.

[-] -1 points by Perspective (-243) 12 years ago

Lol I challenge you to show me an elected Federal govt Democrat who isn't wealthy, you can't. Sad you cant see they are all just slightly different versions of the same thing.

[-] -2 points by factsrfun (8342) from Phoenix, AZ 12 years ago

I can see the difference between you and someone who supports OWS.

[-] -2 points by factsrfun (8342) from Phoenix, AZ 12 years ago

So you hate people who are wealthy even when they do the right thing?

(We got a number of dems in our state house who are not wealthy by the way)

I don't believe you I think you hate OWS.

[-] -1 points by Perspective (-243) 12 years ago

I specified "elected Federal govt Democrat" notr state. The right thing? You mean like insider trading to become rich that you or I would go to jail for? Don't get me wrong, I believe both parties are corrupt but until a 3rd party becomes viable we must vote to our best interests and I have yet to see anything the Dems have put forth to solve our countries problems.

[-] -2 points by factsrfun (8342) from Phoenix, AZ 12 years ago

So you advocate surrender? I disagree, I think we should fight back, and the fight starts by getting rid of Republicans.

[-] -1 points by Perspective (-243) 12 years ago

See,you're just a left wing sycophant. Maybe if you took a litlle personal responsibility for yourself instead of blaming others you might do better. Instead you just seek to tear others down in a pathetic attempt to make yourself feel good.

[-] -2 points by factsrfun (8342) from Phoenix, AZ 12 years ago

Because I have a mind and can make decisions you fear me, you attack me, you sound like every talking point that ever came out of the right wing noise machine, Telling anybody who can see how obvious you are that it is they who have been fooled. I know your language you come here to present the talking points of right wing think tanks and nothing else!

[-] 0 points by Perspective (-243) 12 years ago

No I'm just saying you hate anything even remotely conservative, you're very bigoted and hateful.I could tell you water was wet and you would deny it because I said it LOL.

[-] -2 points by factsrfun (8342) from Phoenix, AZ 12 years ago

No water is wet, see your strawman doesn't work here, if you have a position you are not afraid to share then might know what else we agree about

[-] 0 points by factsrfun (8342) from Phoenix, AZ 6 years ago

Loud, crass, stupid, distasteful, over the top? Absolutely. Fit for publication in a syndicated online newspaper? Debatable; this has more of a place on South Park or The Simpsons. Much different from the rantings and spewings of men like Glenn Beck and Bill O'Reilly? Not much. In fact, that thing was actually somewhat tamer than some of the more inflammatory things Beck's said in his time, especially considering that Doyle was poking fun while Beck and O'Reilly expect to be taken (and often are taken) deadly seriously. Now, I'd obviously prefer a world in which none of them engaged in this game, but as long as you refuse to keep your hatemongers and troublemakers on a leash when they're on the air you have no right to ask us to restrain ours.
