Forum Post: Repeal Citizens United and Re-enact Glass-Steagall

It's a year to elections: enough time for actual citizens to get on the ballot who will dedicate themselves to restoring fairness and strengthening the social fabric. No endorsements, no advertising, no big money or powerful friends. Social media can make it possible. Sort of what the Tea Party tried to do but without the misguided and often hateful ideology. Can we vote our way to sanity? Start by limiting corporate influence on politics (overturning Citizens United) and putting sane regulations on banking (Glass-Steagall).

I don't think OWS is anti-capitalism, I wouldn't want to live under any other system. But a government in thrall to private interest is a perversion of the free market mindset. It's killing us and destroying our beautiful country. I trust you, I trust myself. I want to trust my government again. We have to become it. (At the very least, some will have jobs and health insurance for a few years. I'd like to see that happen for regular, honorable people who haven't been able to catch a break.)

And Repeal Gramm-Leach-Bliley! Here's your link, its a little bit time-consuming, but give it the time, and you'll feel strongly too.

ok, I just looked it up. "When the Supreme Court interprets the meaning of a provision in the Constitution, its decision can be overturned directly only by a constitutional amendment. But decisions interpreting a federal statute can be overturned simply through the enactment of a new statute, so that Congress has a relatively easy means to reject the Court's reading of statutes."

Thanks for making me learn how this works. Facts are useful things.

I agree with both of your main points and I'd like to see them enacted at some point during the next year or two if possible.

Repealing Citizens United would likely mean waiting for one of the conservative justices to retire.

We might stand a better chance of pressuring congress to amend the constitution to say simply this:

The word "person" refers ONLY to individual living, breathing human beings.

Can't an Act of congress overturn a Supreme Court decision? Isn't that what separation and balance of power all about?
