Anyone interested in organizing a serious effort to create a resources network? Governing entities and power brokers consistently institute control over the population by centralizing and limiting access to resources and information.
Examples of this:
- Clean Food & Water
- Shelter
- Transportation
- Communication
Also used to control and influence us, though less critical for survival:
- Entertainment
- Information and News (esp. the unbiased kind)
- Education
- Religion and Spiritual Beliefs
- Community Status
All these factors could be decentralized, and put into the hands of local communities. This was, in fact, the original idea behind the states, but this has been largely circumvented. If a network was created to both decentralize many of the control points, and propagate knowledge on how to provide for oneself, this would be a great assurance against an existing or future power broker collapsing or hijacking the efforts and energy being poured out now.
Money is just an idea; the access to resources it represents is the real leash. If money didn't get us most of the above, it would just be paper.
Anyone interested, have any ideas, opposite opinions, etc.? Would appreciate any thoughts or interest in the idea, and thanks for reading!
I think things endeavors and philosophies behind Open Source Ecology and Wikinomics support what you are talking about. Little do many people know that Open Source Ecology not only has info on their "50 important inventions", but have started a wiki where people can contribute specific knowledge on all sorts of community and individually sustainable issues and projects. These range from beekeeping to greenhouses.
Hey, since you replied... How can we get more people involved in something like that? How can we broaden the scope?
Also, wow, somebody actually replied! I'd given up :)
That's very cool! I checked out some of the videos, after which I realized the scope of the main project; I'll hunt down that wiki next!
I think it is a nice ideal to have everyone collaborate on these issues in one place and for those that will actually get some use out of it, they should be encouraged to make hard copies of the info as to decentralize the information while also ensuring it's security if something were to happen to the digital info. There is plenty of great info on it and perhaps if we were to start a specific facebook group for this purpose we could get a small or large team working on it. There are so many permaculture and intentional communities on facebook that we could network with that live and breath sustainability that could probably contribute with minimal effort.
That's a great idea! Want to work with me on something like that? Maybe just a big list of what's already out there for starters, and then begin hunting down more info and network with others. If so, PM me, and we can chat. :)
Yeah, definitely providing a way to download and print off is a big one - eg., what if the power goes out, right? Or the network goes down... One thing I'm excited about is the Book Creator Wikipedia just came up with. It's still buggy right now, but I'm hoping they'll release it so anyone with a MediaWiki install can use it. You can select any number of Wiki articles, and either print, or save a book in PDF form. Very great option for easy redistribution without reinventing the wheel, and allows anyone who visits said wiki to choose what they want.
heh, I appear to be talking to myself when I ask about ideas or solutions.
"Why yes, e000, sure, let's do that. See you in a month."
/me sits in a corner and types on an invisible keyboard. :D
Hmm, come to think of it, actions do speak louder than words, and implementing an actual change does walk, not talk, right? I think I'll start this one.
I think an easy way to begin this kind of networking would just be something like a wiki based platform on each area of need that people could collaborate on.
Communication is really important to preserving the flow of support, too. Alternatives to the common lines of communication - the phone system, the Internet, the postal system, etc. would be a very useful tool.
My thoughts right now on this are something that could be distributed easily - loving the idea of FreedomBox (personal network platform) for a mechanism to communicate this without a central (vulnerable) server - a list of tools to help people create their own resources again. Simple things like knowledge of how to make/grow your own food, how to get clean water, knowledge of how to use tools that we've forgotten about, etc. Other networks like seed exchanges, maps of natural resources, transportation sharing and alternatives in case of gas shortages, alternatives to the Internet for wide communication (which is still open for many countries, but under fire right now in the US!), local shelter areas and homes willing to trade shelter for labor or other goods, etc.
Just having that kind of sharing of resources and information on alternatives would greatly reduce the total control that any governing body has over the population. We keep talking about how we (Americans, though maybe this applies elsewhere) are being dumbed down, losing our capacity to provide for ourselves, being fed like sheep and following any orders our owners give us because we have no other choice. I dislike that trend, and I think we can do something about it very easily, if we just wake up and start taking our lives into our own hands again...
Oops, my list came out wrong. Should have read:
And on News - that's the biased kind that is used, not the unbiased kind :D
I am amased at how Occupy works. Would like to have your input on the movement to understaqnd it better. I am asking you to answer 10 questions and I am happy to share results if you are interested. Please, take some time for it: Thank you! http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/Q3NF7QB
All true, and although I'm all in favor of taking down today's ineffective and inefficient Top 10% Management Group of Business & Government, there's only one way to do it – by fighting bankers as bankers ourselves. Consequently, I have posted a 1-page Summary of the Strategic Legal Policies, Organizational Operating Structures, and Tactical Investment Procedures necessary to do this at:
