The rat infestation at Occupy D.C. has become so serious that protesters should be cleared out of their encampment at a federal park near the White House, said Washington Mayor Vincent C. Gray.
The mayor's office also is seeking reimbursement from Uncle Sam for its $1.6 million in costs, such as police patrols, in dealing with the Occupy D.C. sites.
So every other protest group has to pay for permits and for clean-up, why are we not offering to pay for our environmental impact? Why are we forcing the 99% to pay for our messes? Why are we nor living up to our avowed standards? I mean really? How can we advance as a force if we can't pay our way??
Rats in DC what a scoop

First, $1.6 million dollars absolutely has to be an inflated figure. PBS estimated the total in the crowd at about 500 people.
Second, many, if not most groups, protest or otherwise, pay a nominal charge for permits. Virtually none pay for clean up. (Commercial concerts do, mostly.) OWS is no different in that respect, other than the issue of a couple of hundred dollars for the permits.
The Tea Party groups left the protest sites cleaner than they were before they arrived.
But they left the country a mess.
OWS repeatedly requested permits for garbage dumpsters and porta-potties, and the Mayor denied the permits.
Well we all know that the police get time and a half or double time for working these things. It doesn't take long for it to add up.
See below.
Ask the DC mayor who has to pay for it. Ask Bloomberg in NYC what they have spent. We are a laughingstock to most of middle America...
New York was different, as it was a long-term occupation, and some repairs to the park were necessary. DC was virtually an overnight stay.
Both mayors include police costs, including overtime, in their demands. Bloomberg, no doubt, also includes court costs of hearings to defend largely illegal arrests. Sending so many police to a non-violent rally was their choice, and mostly unnecessary. The decision was theirs, not OWS's. It is on them.
You cannot be serious?
Dead serious.
The Police were repeatedly sent in, not because there was any danger to anyone, but because the Mayor decided to make a show of things.
I thought you were talking about Congress.
Ha...Not making a difference huh?....ok....
I am really troubled by the double standard. The other 99% don't respect us because we get preferential treatment. Until we pay our way we will never accomplish our goals. We have over $700k in the bank. We should use that as a down payment to NY city. Then pay of the balance under a payment plan. Then we can march down the street with our heads held high!!
Ok....;)......"marcher".
OWS is costing way more than it is worth. The filthy slugs leave mountains of garbage every place they go and we have to pay for the cleanup
There's only $270,000 left in the kitty.
Did you notice that "none of the posts" addressed the issue about "clean-up and pay for "our messes".
