Money in politics is undoubtedly the single largest contributing factor to the state of decay. I can't think of ANYTHING else that affects more goals of the Occupy movement than this.

Here's another tactic to use in conjunction:

I'm looking for an amendment overturning Citizens United and public only financing of elections. Both the right and the left and everyone in between can get on board for this one, which is good; cause we're gonna need em to get it done.

I think before you do that you should actually read the Supreme Court decision in its entirety because this is definitely a free speech issue.

[-] 1 points by dankpoet (425) 13 years ago

I am not refuting its a free speech issue. Its been decided wrong. The issue itself would be moot with public only elections. However to even get them we are going to have to amend the Constitution.

Actually, no... read it and you will eventually conclude that the issue was decided correctly as a free speech issue. Non-profit organizations like United should have the right to broadcast even derogatory speech prior to an election.

I guess it isn't arguable that this is not the case after it being adjudicated by the Supreme Court. But that wasn't my point. It shouldn't be admissible and I don't care if they are a 403(b) or a church or anything else I DO NOT WANT them contributing.

Who is them? This is not a corporation, nor is this the corporate modus operandi - the corporations use PACs and soft money to achieve their goals of buying favor.

This was an association of people who pooled their resources to create a derogatory video of Hilary Clinton. And they should have the right of free speech to publicly broadcast by electronic means within 30 days of an election.

The administration's attack on this one was intended as a vote of support for Hilary. And the Republicans, never, ever, read the decision. So they have no idea what they're even talking about.

I don't want an association or any other entity to be able to pool resources and buy TV spots, I want government only financing of elections. Your speech should equal my speech, nobody should be able to talk louder, only smarter. Talk to anybody you want, form an association to canvas with volunteers, but you can't buy air time, anywhere, at all.

Public financing in an effort to create a fair playing field does not address the issue of PAC money - it's lobbyists and PAC money that buy favor. And the election of a President has very little to do with the Congressional business as usual mentality.

But I will cede equal air time - sure, let's do it.

No lobbyists, no PAC. You simply cannot make a monetary contribution. That is are only real hope to not drive the country and the planet into the abyss.

Well then what would all 37,000 of our lobbyists do? What would Congress do if it were not entertaining lobbyists? What would all those attorneys do? What would real estate office people in Washington do? Or those that provide services to those offices?

You know, it seems the control of international wealth through the favor of the most persuasive political force in the world is a very rewarding business.

Not for long ;)

The entire world is indebted to this institution of wealth which is very capable of defending itself. .

You are so right!

Occupy Congress.

Clean up government. take the bribe out of government. All else fails if we don't fix this.

Also, take all the people associated with corporations OUT of government positions. They should NOT be allowed to regulate themselves.

Politics is a cash only business in all levels of government.
