Forum Post: Proud to be the 1%

My husband and I work. We pay our bills. We pay our taxes. Clearly we are not part of the 99% because we support ourselves and do not live off the government dole. We are proud to be part of the 1% that make America strong.

You pay bills and your pay taxes? sorry to break it to you, but then you are not part of the 1%, the 1% do not pay bills or taxes. My husband and I work, we pay our bills and we pay taxes and our daughter's student loans. We are very fortunate, however, WE STILL SUPPORT our fellow humans in Occupy Wall Street and around the world on our fight against corporate, bank and government corruption and immoral manipulation of our lives. In an era of record corporate earnings, medical advances and excessive food production how can anyone justify that we still have hungry and sick people in the world??? Because 'they' are lazy? uneducated? dirty? ".... as you have done it to one of the least of these my brothers, you have done it to me" Matthew 25:40 I'm a fortunated one but I am with you Occupy Wall Street: this movement is about taking care of each other,

I work and pay my bills too. I also pay my taxes. So does everyone else I know.

Not everyone is as lucky. Believe me, a lot of this is just plain luck. If my dad didn't have his teaching job... If my 82 year old grandmother lost her health... If I couldn't find a job and had to move back home even though I went to an Ivy League school and had a 3.70 GPA... There are a lot of "if's" here.

It's time to question the status quo.

If you're happy with your life, good for you, but plenty of people aren't.

What? do you have millions of dollars and pay less taxes than 99% of American's? If so you are the 1% and shame on you....if you think the 99% dosent work or try to, or pay their bills and their taxes you don't know the majority of American's worried about our future. I have 6 part time on call jobs and can't pay my bills. Listen, watch and learn and if you truly are among America's 1% take a look at how you got that blessing and have some compassion for others less fortunate.

It's not the 99% and the 1% It's more like the 20% the 79% and the 1% The 20% are protesting, the 79% are trying to decide what they think and the 1% don't care yet.

Try not to alienate the 79% The world is not "us vs. them," the world is not black and white. Grow up a little bit folks.

Firstly, do you know what the 1% means?

//Available data isn't exact, but a family enters the top 1% or so today with somewhere around $300k to $400k in pre-tax annual income and over $1.2M in net worth.//

Second, if you are indeed a part of it AND you got that through hard work and determination, good for you, I support that.

If on the other hand, you are part of the many industries that received government bailouts, no bid contracts, etc, then that is not something that I support and you are part of what is wrong in America, corporatism, the fusion of corporation and government, financed by tax payer money, which the government was very happy to contribute because they wouldn't want to alienate their generous supporters (finance industry namely).

Not all of the 99% are rich. Some are just lucky enough to be comfortable right now. The 99% are made up of many people who work and pay taxes.

Don't make the mistake of thinking that just because you haven't suffered personally yet that this fight is any less yours.

You are part of the 99%. You are part of the dying middle class. You are part of the last generation to have a better chance of reaching middle class than their parents. You are part of the group who relies on your job for health care. You are part of the group who survives at the whim of a decision for ever increasing profits no matter who or what it hurts. You are simply lucky enough to not be one of the millions who used to be just like you....

but your banks exist because of government dole- think about the bail outs

I believe you are missing the point. Are you proud of Bush, Obama, congress? Do you think they represent your interest, or lobbied interest? If the bills you push are getting passed, then yes you are part of the 1%, but if you interests are not represented, then you are not part of the 1%. The 99% represents the citizens who have no say, who like my mother, work payed their bills, pay their taxes, then are laid off without retirement, health care, or anything. Hopefully you understand this before this inevitable circumstance happens to you.
