Forum Post: Protestors are Time's "Person of the Year" DO WE DESERVE IT?

So what have we accomplished? We have gotten publicity, became a talking point, caught the public's eye and have gained support. However, there's a reason that MOST occupy movements have not been bothered by police: because no body in the established government cares. Occupying a city park and discussing democratic ideals, though a noble pursuit, will not cause the drastic power shift that our world needs right now. So what does the freedom-loving, change-craving, and all around pissed off protester do when the government ignores their message?

Do something the government can't ignore. Do something that will cause a change. Do something that will create a better world. Some people point to voting as the best way to create change. Theoretically yes, but after watching President Obama's first term in office and watching the Republican party's debates on TV, I'm not convinced any of these men, or the one woman, represent what I want my country to be.

So now it comes down to this: either leave, or enact change. Let's face it, America is no longer the lone beacon of rights and justice that it used to be. I mean, Argentina has legalized gay marriage before we have. That's right, Argentina, has more progressive civil rights. What has happened to this country? America could be so great. We have enough money to feed all our citizens, give them healthcare, and switch our industries to cleaner, more environmentally friendly options. We have citizens everywhere who yearn for the chance to work, sweat, and bleed for what they believe in.

So why is our country getting worse instead of better? Because the same people are still in power, and we're all sitting in a park talking and playing drums.

As I understand what Time Magazine's Person Of The Year is awarded to the person(s) who, good or bad, have most affected our world. On that basis I'd have to agree with Time's choice of "Protestors."

I honestly doubt Occupy would have gotten Time's recognition had the protests in the Arab world not occurred and been successful. Occupy just adds a little local flavor. As to the rest, no one seems to want to try running candidates in elections. There doesn't seem to be any specific set of goals outlined yet or any clear plan on how proceed. They point to the obvious problems but don't seem to want to do anything constructive about them. Gets more then a little discouraging.
