Organizers refer to the man as “Street Poet,” according to a news release written by Mark Faulk, who referred to himself as a moderator for the group.
“At a candlelight vigil last night to honor first responders, Street Poet delivered a powerful poetic commentary about the complexities of homelessness and drug abuse, and the system's failure to adequately deal with these issues,” Faulk wrote.
Please do not take it as a joke. We have to make sure of every body well being in the camps. I think every body is preoccupied with their agendas.
We also joined the rat race in our own. We were suppose improve living conditions of 99%. Take a pause and stay focus
So this person was blaming everyone but himself for his condition and his solution is more government intervention into his personal problems. Another liberal bites the dust.
you must be a bit upset by ows and all the publicity it is getting to spend time on this forum. i've never nor will i ever waste my time harassing people whose political views i don't agree with. takes all kinds i guess.
btw. your compassion is inspiring!
I have compassion for those that deserve it, those that try, but I do not feel sorry for anyone who puts a gun to their head or a needle in their arm. Freedom of choice, baby. rock on.
Who are "those that deserve it"? That's what we disagree on. I think EVERY human deserves my compassion. You think only those who pass your (doubtlessly anachronistic, misanthropic, and blinkered) litmus test deserve it.
This was a human being. A person who was loved, perhaps had family, certainly had a community, and who clearly wanted a better life for us all. And he died in the hope that someday we'd see that better life.
I salute him as a fallen brother. I pity you as an equally fallen brother. The difference is, he now rests in eternity while you have time to make a change and fight for a better, fairer, happier world. Here's hoping...

OWS is harassing people for their political views they do not agree with.
ows is excercising their political right guaranteed in the constitution, remember that document?
You chose to use the word harassment, so with that, I am not harassing, I am using my first amendment right. touche' dumbass.
my point is why harass people just because you don't agree. is it necessary to be insulting? often people resort to that kind of behaviour when they're frustrated

I don't think his death was caused by Vitamin D deficiency.
Most illness has many factors. There are nutritional factors, there are disease factors, and there are the social and psychological factors that effect those two. "Blue Zones" goes into some of that, as does Dr. Andrew Weil. And of course genetics is an issue, but an Dr. Fuhrman suggests, whatever genetic weak links we have, for most people, good nutrition (or a good environment) can help prevent those weak links from being pulled on and breaking.
But vitamin D deficiency is widespread in the USA for a few reasons -- we have adopted a mostly indoor lifestyle, we travel in enclosed vehicles, we wear a lot of clothes, and, worst of all, the US RDA for Vitamin D is about five to ten times too low for adults. For most adults, the amount needed from sunlight or supplements probably should be on the order of 2000-5000 IU Vitamin D3 per day, subject to blood testing and the uncertainty that more research would be better to find exactly what different people need -- see grassrootshealth.net for example.
On top of that, many dermatologists and pediatricians have essentially committed malpractice by telling everyone to fear the sun without telling them to get enough vitamin D from supplementation -- and in the process, by some estimates, caused ten or more cancers from vitamin D deficiency for every easily treatable melanoma they have prevented as well as an autism epidemic.
Vitamin D is used by every cell in the body for all sorts of purposes. Lack of it has been linked to cognitive issue (including autism) and depression and heart disease and joint pain and so on. That then can be linked to self-medication by addictive drugs to try to deal with the problems. Then if you eat badly as a result of all that (including by eating few good fats like omega 3s or stuff from nuts and seeds), you are going to put your heart at risk, and have a weak immune system, and so on.
Anyway, we can't bring back Street Poet, whatever the cause. And as above, health is a community issues and a systems thing, ultimately, even as we can point out specific problems. But more people, especially in winter, can have their vitamin D levels checked and figure out what the appropriate levels of supplements are for their own situations. It's certainly something the OWS medical teams should be aware of, and it is the cheapest and easiest way to improve health for most people that I know of (eating right is great, but takes more effort and money). Vitamin D can also help prevent a lot of flus and colds, which is a big issue in a crowded encampment. (There are some rare health conditions where vitamin D supplementation is problematical, so ideally people would check with their doctors, etc.)
For more details, see: http://www.vitamindcouncil.org/
Or: http://www.grassrootshealth.net/recommendation
Or: http://www.drfuhrman.com/library/vitamin_D_recommendations.aspx
(Those are in decreasing orders of recommended levels, but all are higher than the US RDA.)
