No matter what we want, more capitalism, more socialism, communism or resource based economy, I think we all can agree that monopolies are what we need to take care of right now. They are the ones that create most of the problems, they bribe the government, they monopolize the market, they pollute the environment, they conduct risky market manipulations and expecting the tax payers to bail them out, purchasing and hoarding large amounts of products to create scarcity and sell it for more, they abuse animals and covering their faults.
Domain Names - Most people buying a domain name to build a web-site or a few web-sites, others to resell them or to trick people. This one, for example, owns 300,000 domain names. http://money.cnn.com/magazines/business2/business2_archive/2007/06/01/100050989/
Land - Property tax aka tax on improvement never made sense to me, it is completely counterproductive. It seams like it's intended to deincentify improvements to a land. But, there are some that take big advantage of it. For example, Ted Turner the founder of CNN owning approximately two million acres (8,000 km2), greater than the land areas of Delaware and Rhode Island combined. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ted_Turner#Achievements Here are some some people who own US: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/10/14/the-biggest-landowners-in_n_762628.html#s155819&title=10_Stan_Kroenke
Radio Spectrum - One the most scares resources now, capitalism proposes that companies should compete for the market, but when a few cellphone companies own all the mobile radio spectrum, competition is impossible. Which means we're stack with att, verizon, sprint and t-mobile and when one of them getting out of business, another will buy it's spectrum.
Income - We all know this one :)
Energy/Fossil Fuel Use - Linear taxation does not deincentify enough energy overuse.
Small businesses, family businesses, cooperatives and unions are less likely to do any of the above.
Progressive Taxation can significantly lover or completely prevent all of the above.
Quadratic function(tax=units^2*rate) can be applied to resources such as land. We just need to define a few constants like "average unit" and "rate per unit".
Lets say "unit" = 300m2/person and "rate" = $30/unit2
Say a person have 300m2 of land, the person will pay $30
Now if a person have 600m2 of land, the person will pay $120
1000m2 - $333
Same can be done with domain names. unit = 5 domain names/person, rate = $50/year
if a person own 1 domain name, the person will pay $2/year
2 domain name - $8
5 domain names - $50
10 domain names - $200
It can also be applied to other resources like food.
Here are some arguments for it's implementation and how to apply it to income: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Progressive_tax#Arguments_for_implementation
It looks simple, but it can be applied to almost everything to prevent most of our problems.
It can also help with government debt problem, create more jobs, lower land and other resources prices, make our society more equal, free market economists would be able to create their small businesses, socialists would be able to create their unions, communists and supporters of resources based economy could create moneyless communities. And we all would coexist in harmony. :)
Oh, one more thing, it should not apply to corporation, but to their shares instead. So, if owner own 51% of shares, the tax should treat 51% as a separate entity and assign to it 51% of each resource owned. And so on for each share holders. The share holders should also be responsible for the corporation dids in proportion to the shares they are holding.
This would really enhance the fair tax code debate. It's item 5 on The List of Grievances: https://sites.google.com/site/the99percentdeclaration/
Oh, cool, I didn't see that.
Trough I'm proposing to apply it not only to income, but to other important resources like land, radio spectrum, etc. And to get rid of the stupid counterproductive "home improvement tax".
Any thoughts on the legality of the income tax (ie:never ratified?)
Everything is legal unless prohibited by law.
If you meant morality, then excessive income by the means of exploitation of others is immoral and that's what's would be taxed by progressive taxation.
I heard there was no law in existence that says you have to pay income tax. And yes the mega bonus income stuff strikes me as immoral too. (tried to post as reply, got 'system malfunction'
Patent renewal fees are progressive, the longer you keep the patent, the higher the costs.
So now you're taxing wealth instead of income huh? Great. Please excuse me while I pack for anywhere but here.
Tax Reform Steps
Extend Bush-era income tax rate cuts. Cut the dividend tax rate. Cut the individual capital gains tax rate.. Cut the corporate tax rate to 15 percent. Liberalize Roth IRAs. Repeal the estate tax. Repeal the individual and corporate alternative minimum taxes. Enact a consumption-based flat tax.
