Forum Post: PLEASE READ: One Potent Idea for a Broad Consensus

One Common Interest: End Corporate Lobbyists

from there all these other issues can be raised, debated, and voted on based on our representative government weighted one vote per one citizen.

Corporate lobbyists serve the interests of perhaps 1 in 1,000 of us. with those numbers I can imagine an end to the practice. One issue, one focus nearly all of us will agree on that will open the door to all the other issues being negotiated with our common interest in the forefront.

the potential for technology to increase democracy is real... I think the next step is the emergence of a single potent idea that has broad enough appeal to become law.

If you agree with ending corporate lobbyists as the idea, please post. if you feel another idea will be more potent and have broader appeal, please post.

I'm all for an end to Corporate Lobbyists. We also need campaign finance reform that removes all corporate money from the political system.

Also, how about making it illegal for representatives (or their underlings) to meet with any lobbyists unless it is on camera/webcam.

Randwulf, consensus it is!

we are in agreement. I can see your point about camera/webcam :)

I think for now the point is one potent idea with broad rational consensus the public can agree promotes democracy, individual, and common interest... end corporate lobbying!

let's Give Democracy a Chance!

How do you end them?

[-] 1 points by ILikeDemocracy (66) 13 years ago

changing the laws.

In Egypt they used technology to over ride the will of a dictator.

we already have democratic representation, and ending corporate lobbyists is in the interest of 999 of 1,000 of us.

we speak up, get this singular issue into a debate on these websites, if it becomes the issue of this movement it gets covered in the media, the public realizes it is in all of our interests, it becomes part of the debate in Washington, support is overwhelming, it becomes law, and all these other issues are argued based on forming consensus rather than bought and paid for.

I meant specifically which new laws do you support? How do you get them passed? Do you mean outlawing lobbyists? What form would such a law take (that is how to you identify a lobbyist)? Do you want 100% public financing, for example. Outlaw any contact between people working for corporations (contracted or employees) from contacting Congressman?

It is just very unclear what ending lobbyists actually means.

limit campaign donations to individual human beings. set a limit to donations within realm majority of public can afford (something like $10 or $100)

thanks Periwinkle. I think we need to try to remove the boulder blocking our common interest in the environment and so many other issues:

corporate lobbyists!

let's give democracy a chance!

On MSNBC (UP program this am) I heard that while the WH speaks about GREEN technology; it is not walking the walk. There is collusion with the fossil fuel industries.

thans periwinkle, I agree simply "voting out" won't work, yes, it is the rules that need to change.

All we are saying, is give democracy a chance!

I think the policy of the self serving lobbyists is criminal just like a bribe is criminal and should go the way of the DO-DO BIRD. What a back door barbaric idea it is in todays world if we don't know by now that human beings in general should not be trusted, just read your present history for all the skulldugerry that went on lets say since watergate...

[-] 1 points by ILikeDemocracy (66) 13 years ago

I see why you call it criminal bobby, and fortunately, I estimate 999 of 1,000 of us will be served by its elimination. why not be part of this idea taking hold in a democracy?

All we are saying, is give democracy a chance!

Hi Ilike,

This issue is crucial to regaining a government of the people. Even if the politicians are voted out (seemingly impossible w/corporations are people) the money flowing into DC will continue to corrupt. Koch money opened the way for extreme right to take over state and local governments that allowed further loss of civil rights.
