Forum Post: Pass American Jobs Act or lose Black Friday

I propose a specific demand/threat: Congress should pass the President’s American Jobs Act in its entirety by Thanksgiving or Occupy brings gridlock to the shopping malls on their busiest day. (The day after Thanksgiving, so called “Black Friday” when the big retail chains start making money: get out of the red and into the black.)

Congress rejected the entire plan. They’ve passed politically appealing bits – not enough to make a difference in the employment picture. They’re also taking the entire week of Thanksgiving off. I say to them: get to work and pass the entire plan! Now, they may not listen to us 99%’ers but they’ll listen to the wealthy investors who contribute to their campaigns and usually get the legislation they want. And those investors do NOT want anything to get in the way of sales and profits. The threat of lost sales and profits will get them on the phones to their congressional cronies.

The Occupiers joined by the unemployed and others can: •take up precious parking spaces and reduce the number of real shoppers in the mall •keep salespeople busy with questions and small talk to keep them from selling and ringing up sales •fill up the checkout lines just to ask questions. Lots of shoppers won’t even enter a store if they see long lines •fill up tables in the food court so real shoppers won’t spend money on food and maybe they’ll even leave the mall •in short, clog up the malls to the point of ruining companies’ sales and profits for the entire year
Imagine all the occupiers and 14 million unemployed Americans in the malls Black Friday “just looking.”

I actually think this is a very good idea. Imagine if every unemployed person occupied the malls on black Friday. Signs and everything, we could make it a national holiday for the disenfranchised in America.

Boycott black Friday anyway. I've been doing it for years. The holidays are meant to spend time with your family, not materialism.

cool...no more black friday

Six day General Strike across the country starting Thanksgiving Eve all through the weekend until the following Monday. Don't shop! Don't take transpotation! All workers stay home except in cases of emergency medical procedures.

You go ahead and stay home, all .0099% of you.

No. Last thing we need is for more spending and more national debt.

who cares what congress currently passes? Every vote they make is suspect unless we do something about this: http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-18560_162-57323527/congress-trading-stock-on-inside-information/

Like any of you are getting up before noon that day. lol

If you hadn't heard, the "American Jobs Act," which mostly was just a BS political move to begin with, is done. Not even Obama is pushing it any more.

That would be insane. Stop Black Friday. DO you know how many businesses would feel the pressure if Black Friday didn't happen?

Support small business and it won't be an issue, no? No malls or big chain retailers. Very simple, actually.

Why? What did a place like Best Buy do? Best Buy is going to have much more affordable stuff than a small electronics store.

[-] 3 points by Kiki999 (10) 13 years ago

You're 100% right. But this country wasn't born on big business and retail chains. Most small business owners work 80 plus hours a week. And they suffer a loss by either closing for the holidays to be with family or by staying open and not being with family. Can't you at least go through one holiday season boycotting best buy??

[-] 2 points by dalton (111) 13 years ago

Exactly. These people work.

[-] -1 points by Farleymowat (415) 13 years ago

Absolutely not. Lots of college students work there and need our support, not a lay off.

[-] 2 points by Kiki999 (10) 13 years ago

Ok. Your right. Let the stores open at midnight or three am whatever......just don't buy anything! For one day. The employees will get paid and the stores will still lose

college students need better jobs than BEST BUY?

[-] 2 points by MiMi1026 (937) from Springfield, VA 13 years ago

Exactly why it Should be done.

What American Jobs Act? Oh you mean the new set of misappropriated stimulus plans and the resulting taxes we will be saddled with that is called a jobs act! No thanks! Been there, done that, didn't work the first two times so why would we try it again!

[-] -1 points by Farleymowat (415) 13 years ago

It's not a jobs bill. It's pay back for the unions.

Yeah and let's go block people from getting abortions too - harass the hell out of them!! Occupy the clinics. No one should be free to make their own choices!! You WILL think the way we do! Let's see those shoppers try to find escorts into the mall!!

Dont enough people get trampeled on that day? I wont have a guilty conscious plowing through some OCWers to get to my half off garmin gps.

[-] -2 points by justhefacts (1275) 13 years ago

Oh let's destroy the American economy more than it already is! Let's ruin Christmas and the holidays for the 99%.....who don't like us more and more every day! Let's harass the poor, overworked, underpaid sales clerks on the day that gives them nightmares the most.

You really do not represent the 99% at all do you? I'm sure the 20 protesters in the city neighboring my town will just crush the crap out of sales on Black Friday.

If you are unemployed how can you afford cars?
