Forum Post: OWS Needs Focus & Political Influence to Survive

What's Next? We can protest all we want- my guess is when the weather starts getting very cold much of the protesting will cease. What is OWS doing as far as becoming a politcal voice in DC? If we want to make significant changes, then we have to get representation inside Washington. We also need to narrow our focus to specific bulletpoints: for example, "eliminate corporate money / special isterests from Government." Love them or hate them, the Tea Party is strong because it has entered the politcal arena with a centralized agenda that is backed up by corporate interests (Koch Brothers, anyone?). Do not underestimate them. While protesting is worthy and proven to be powerful, OWS needs to start thinking about its next steps, or it will die off in time. If we want to fight for change then we cannot fade into oblivion like a "fashion statement." Again, I ask: What's next?

Its about time we go official and public. With something. My vote is for ending political corruption/campaign reform.

There's enough people that get this. We need to move beyond and take this to the next level.
New people are hesitant because there is noise of Socialism. Nothing against the Socialists out there, you've freely expressed your opinions. But the fact is, I do not think there is consensus for this. Or many of the other topics of chatter out there.

We need to go official and public to breakthrough to the next level of supporters. We may lose some, but we will gain much more.

I agree. A lot of us who back the Movement are angry with the Obama administration, and rightfully so in some regards. However, I put more faith in Obama than I do in ANY Republican. The GOP is bought and paid for by corporate money. You and I - the regular working folks of America- need to get our voices heard in DC, and the OWS movement is the best chance we have at getting it done

Monied corruption in government is bi-partisan. They are all in bed with BIG money.

The over 40 crowd who are dominating many of the local rallies are not interested in the Adbuster/anarchist alternative congress/3rd party solution being pushed by early organizers via petition. Rather many want to take back control of the Dem party and clean out the real Congress next year. This needs discussion in the local GA's if the self appointed "Steering Committe" will allow such a discussion.

This reminds me of McCarthy and the New Left. Hate to see this fail because the anarchists who started this retain an iron fist control and misrepresent the voices of the majority.
