I've been seeing some posts stating that the movement needs a leader or a group of leaders. I respond that we do not need a leader. We must strategically observe the situation at hand.
The opponent: They have access to vast monetary, technological, and media resources. They also have an army of minions in the White House, Congress, Supreme Court, and in both political parties, as well as in the financial houses and institutions. They also command the police forces, and large sectors of the military.
Us: We have a mass of citizenry, the internet, decentralized media and alternative media. We are the many and we outnumber them in sheer human numbers.
For us to engage them via conventional methods is suicide. A head to head type of movement, with a charismatic leader but large numbers of followers, armed with no more than cellphones, smartphones, blogs, youtube, facebook, and twitter, despite the technological wonders, does not confer an advantage to us.
However, it makes far more sense to engage the opponent in guerilla style tactics. Just as they try to infiltrate, befriend, seduce, bribe, and troll us, seeking out "leaders" to co-opt or decapitate, we make sure that our key advantage is in decentralization. They are the sharks swimming in a school of angry pirahna. A vast school.
So far as I can tell, we have both the right and left on the defensive. This is good. We have to keep it coming. If we choose to create a leadership, or a committee, we will lose the guerilla advantage. If we keep the overall demands nebulous enough that they keep questioning, but have an overarching theme that the common citizen sympathizes with (and there are a lot of them out there), we will retain the advantage.
If we crystalize clear leaders and a clear agenda, they will already have co-option, decapitation, and bargaining plans ready to execute. The opposition is unbelievably sophisticated. Do not underestimate them. But in their sophistication is their weakness. They are a set of hierarchies. We are not. We are a horizontal network. Hierarchies are complex systems that can be destroyed with cascaded actions. Horizontal networks, like the internet, can only be slowed down, never taken down.
Keep it decentralized Keep it leaderless Keep it nebulous. And they won't know where to attack. They may lurk amongst us, but they will be lost within us. And we will always retain the advantage.
If you want to read more on how to strategize, The Art of War and Brave New War are excellent places to start.
"Don’t get set into one form, adapt it and build your own, and let it grow, be like water. Empty your mind, be formless, shapeless — like water. Now you put water in a cup, it becomes the cup; You put water into a bottle it becomes the bottle; You put it in a teapot it becomes the teapot. Water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend.
– Bruce Lee.
You have said it better than anyone on the forum in the last week,
I have been saying it in several threads. I even used the quote from the movie 'Viva Zapata" in which he says, "A weak people need a strong leader, a strong people don't need a leader." We need to be strong.
I have said, The media and the 1% are getting it. They know what the issues are. We don't need to spell out demands.
We need numbers and patience. Numbers of registered parties to these conversations and at rallys and occupations and more locations. Over 1325 on Occupy Together, already. Then 1% who paid to create these problems will finally say to themselves, "I guess we took it too far". They will come to us and offer a few small changes that they don't mind giving up.
We say that doesn't really fix things. They offer more, yadda yadda. It will finally get to where they have to hit the "global undo" button and we can get the process fixed so they can't rig it again for a very long time.
We may need a spokesperson, but not a leader. A leader would be expected to be able to commit us to something. I think the 99% want to reserve that to themselves, individually. Once it was called democracy. We call it a constitutional democracy, with a constitution to protect the rights of minorities and provide a framework within which we can all be governed fairly and petition for a redress of our legitimate grievances etc..
We are the 99%.
Since this was a thread about strategies, here's some strategies to use to outwit Bloomberg and his cronies.
http://globalguerrillas.typepad.com/globalguerrillas/2011/10/bloomberg-vs-occupy.html
"BLOOMBERG VS. OCCUPY
Mayor Bloomberg is moving to shut down Occupy Wall Street at Liberty Square tomorrow at 7 AM.
The ruse he is using: the need to clean the "park." He has promised that Liberty Square will be reopened after the cleaning but nobody will be allowed to set up anything in park, nor will sleeping bags be allowed (click the sheet to the left for larger version).
This is going to get interesting. Will be working up some ideas for how this could play out. Let's start off with an assumption. This is Bloomberg vs. Occupy. One mind vs. many minds. The goal is to coerce him into changing his mind. Dissuade him. Get inside his OODA loop.
If you have additional ideas, add them below. Good training in tactical thinking.
Hoisted from the comments:
The flashmob tactic was tried here in Panama couple of years ago by the SUNTRACS construction workers union, and with very small groups pre-planted all over the city they drove the police absolutely crazy. Police would show up at location A, mob would disperse immediately, two text messages and now TWO flashmobs would block streets at different locations. They never followed up with it (preferring massive marches to display force) but it worked very well and with much less people than #ows has available. [courtesy: Okke]
Great post. "They" would love to take out a leader and discredit the movement via a fake scandal aimed at one person.
We do need to educate the protestors on this strategy. Spread the word.
Thank you, Bruce. You highlight key strategic points that we must not ignore. Stay strong.
Ideas are immortal. They cannot kill an idea.
Viva la Revolution
Agree100%.
The message is simple. WORLD WIDE PEACE. Forget America right now. Unite WORLD WIDE with a simple, powerful demand. PEACE. And they will attack and are already. You cannot reform this system, like you cannot unrotten a moldy piece of fruit. Peace is Prosperity. Peace is evolution and advancement. They resist Peace on every level because they HATE IT. They dominate and control with violence. None of this is by mistake. The people that rule this world, which includes the US prison camp, ARE the most violent, sick and ruthless people. Period. Time for GOOD people to stand up and DEMAND PEACE NOW.
We live in a world of finite resources needed for survival. Conflict is therefore inevitable. I appreciate your sentiments LOVEPEACE, but it is not realistic.
Finite resources? The sun pours enough energy onto this planet in 1 second to power our CRAP for centuries.
The only thing finite is our Masters ability to deny us freedom and liberty. If you truly believe the above you have been brainwashed and should prepare for war because that is ALL they are selling you. WAR. DEATH. MURDER. That is what this engineered collapse is all about. A pretext to war on your doorstep. THEY MURDER AND KILL AND DESTROY. You are no different then any other person the kill and command to be killed. They don't like you better. You are not their little pet. You are a number. And if you accept violent domination then that's what you will get.
DEMAND PEACE NOW.
Humanity needs a full on upgrade in consciousness before we can acheive what you want.
One person at a time. Let's start with upgrading ourselves. To initiate the update start Demanding Peace in the face of the lie of utter hopelessness!
Peace Brother!
They usually just make up a leader if there isn't one. They'll take a bradley manning and torture him, i.e. make an example of him, until people start following his example. No one wants a leader but it's unavoidable.
i agree but for the reason that we have enough parties and thats not getting it done right now.
I've seen the wicked fruit of your vine Destroy the man who lacks a strong mind Human pride sings a vengeful song Inspired by the times you've been walked on My stage is shared by many millions Who lift their hands up high because they feel this We are one We are strong The more you hold us down the more we press on (What if?/ Creed/ Human Clay) Do you see your children, honor your children as they are honoring you.
hear, hear!
And goalless. Otherwise then they'd know how to pacify us.
The goal is fine. It's the finer details that degrade into bargaining points that would be used in pacification.
lol, wouldn't we be pacified already if we have no goals?
You may not need a leader, but you do need a comprehensive strategy, and although I'm all in favor of taking down today's ineffective and inefficient Top 10% Management Group of Business & Government, there's only one way to do it – by fighting bankers as bankers ourselves, and thus making all of us leaders. Consequently, I have posted a 1-page Summary of the Strategic Legal Policies, Organizational Operating Structures, and Tactical Investment Procedures necessary to do this at:

I have followed your links and have looked over some of the information. I see a significant part of the groups leadership has relationships and/or connections to the entities OWC is protesting against.
I'm not part of any OWC leadership and neither are the 10 people in my group so far. In fact, my goal is to overthrow all of today's Government and Business as I describe in the link, and thus to end our relationship with both parties.
Send this post to as many people in the movement as possible. Educate them in the tactics. As I said, we are the massive school of angry Pirahna that the sharks must swim inside of.
Well said and i agree completely with the original post.
Be extremely subtle, even to the point of formlessness. Be extremely mysterious, even to the point of soundlessness. Thereby you can be the director of the opponent's fate.
Sun-tzu
This is perfect, and I agree completely. Though the grievances I have seen from other Occupation movements is the lack of some form of organization. How could we pass any laws everyone agrees with if not everyone is informed?
As long as we maintain decentralization. See if you can educate the other occupation movements on this concept. It's critical that they understand this. If necessary, post this to other sites.
I understand the whole shadow thing and better being safe then sorry ... but folks on Main St. that don't have time to research for themselves tell me they don't understand what OWS stands for and therefore can't support an "anarchy" movement. If not leaders or goals, we certainly need to clarify the message so each of us can easily spread the same general message in our communities.
"Fairness for All"

Then let's focus on that. A message conveyed by all.
