Forum Post: Open source technology in medicine research?

Does anyone know if any attempts have been made to create open source technologies in conducting research on new drugs and in the production of new medicines? Health care in most countries is very expensive, yet it hardly ever fulfils its role and provides high quality services. Do you think that such a solution would be possible and could change something in the current system?

I am the publisher and editor-in-chief of Open Health News. Our web site has been created precisely to track all news and projects related to open health. There are now over 1,500 open source healthcare projects and a large number of them are related to open source pharmaceutical research. You guys should take a look at the site <www.openhealthnews.com>.

I am going to sound like a cold hearted person here but there is a logic to what I have to say.

Humanity has evolved and probably been strengthened by various bacteria and viruses. They have been the thing that had molded our immune systems over time. They are our predators that keep the herd strong. Why do we need to cure everything? Maybe it would be better in the long run if disease were allowed to do its job.

I don't mean to sound callous here but it is what it is. I wouldn't want to watch my children die from a disease or any of my loved ones for that matter but it just might be the balance required to prepare the species for what may be in our future. Sure, if you break a bone then set it but cure everything? I have long thought that this might be the missing variable in recent human history. The great military minds have seen fit to keep small pox alive in their potential weapon inventory. What would the world be like if it were set free as the Great Spirit intended? It would lay waste to vast numbers of people for sure but after this miserable process then there might be some natural balance brought back.

This is just a thought and not a suggestion. I think Nature has a way to find something that will feed on large sources of food supplies. Sooner or later there will be a virus that is new to us and it will take the weakest among us. Maybe that would be a positive thing for the species as a whole but not on an individual basis.

disease doesn't discriminate

it only makes the human race stronger against that particular disease

I think medical research should be without bias for profit

I suspect Big Pharma would not like your idea. Thats why it's a great idea. Good luck run with it.
