"We are the 99%" Solidarity March with #OccupyWallStreet at 3 PM

Posted 12 years ago on Oct. 1, 2011, 9:09 a.m. EST by OccupyWallSt

We the 99% will not be silent and we will not be intimidated. This Saturday thousands more of us will march together as one to show that it is time that the 99% are heard. Join us on the 2nd week anniversary of your new movement.

This is a call for individuals, families and community and advocacy groups to march in solidarity with the #occupywallstreet movement on Saturday, October 1st at 3 p.m.

We are unions, students, teachers, veterans, first responders, families, the unemployed and underemployed. We are all races, sexes and creeds. We are the majority. We are the 99 percent. And we will no longer be silent.

As members of the 99 percent, we occupy Wall Street as a symbolic gesture of our discontent with the current economic and political climate and as an example of a better world to come. Therefore we invite the public, our fellow 99 percent, to join us in a march on SATURDAY AT THREE, starting from LIBERTY PLAZA (ZUCCOTTI PARK) at LIBERTY & BROADWAY.

March will end with a gathering and some eating at Brooklyn Bridge Park 5:30 pm.

Special Guests include Amiri Baraka and others! Food provided.

Jesus was the greatest revolutionary. Jesus had nothing and he was up against the 1%, the Roman Senate. He did not have an army. All he did was walk the 100 mile radius from Nazareth and speak.

I am not a pious Christian, but I have to say that you are all Christ-like. Just like you, he had nothing and he had something to say. After 2000 years, Jesus Christ walks again. If he were to be in Zuccotti park, standing with everyone, he would blend in with the crowd.

Are the churches with Jesus? Jesus is for humanity. The churches are for the 1%.

In the end, they may have gotten Jesus, but the world was never the same after that. Stay strong. We must change the world before it's too late.

[-] 0 points by BHOCzar (4) 12 years ago

Jesus said "give to Cesar what is Cesars" but your organization is all about taking and demanding everything be given to you. You are not the 99% you are the 25% who feel you are entitled to everything but have to earn nothing. Gimme Gimme Gimme.org should be your name!

[-] 2 points by conPbitchez (7) 12 years ago

This isn't about getting more stuff or more money, this is alot more. It's about fairness among all human beings. If you are not with this organization, then you're pretty well saying you like to work, pay unfair taxes, and essentially be maniputlated by the corporate world. You are a mere worker. Even if you agree with them they won't care about you. So before you start declaring that we're greedy, look at the people who are running our world, because they will have probably made your monthly salary by the time you've read this.

I understand the need to gripe, moan and blame somebody for the painful condition of today's global economy. It hurts. Yelling about it is cathartic, and to gather in the masses gives the hopeless many a feeling of strength that has been missing for the last three or so years.

But none of this makes any sense! You want to bring utopian cohesion to the world by shutting down our economy? Who's going to carry out your ideals, the justice league? The Easter bunny? Your ideals are fine; noble, selfless, a worthy cause even. But you have to play the capitalist game to get things done, whether you like it or not. Why do you think the socialist communes of the 60's all failed? Because human nature--entrepreneurial nature--is an insurmountable force. BUT it can be harnessed, which is the basis of capitalism. Human self interest will naturally allocate the world's resources to those who can use it the most efficiently: the "invisible hand concept." Take an econ class.

The point I'm trying to make is that you are all trying to hunt the few by burning the forest down. You think the answer to solving our economic problems is by destroying the financial system? Financial institutions raise the capital that runs the companies which create EVERY SINGLE THING YOU USE EVERY DAY. Even non-profits, universities, charities etc. rely on the markets to maintain their endowments and continue to do their vital work.

Complain if you want. Yell, gather, march, whatever you need to do to wear yourself out, and in that moment of breathless relief, clear your head, go back to school, get an internship, read a book, do whatever you need to do to get yourself focused so that our generation can pull our smoldering future out of the ashes.

[-] 1 points by WorkingClassLass (6) 12 years ago

wow - you used all those words to basically tell people to "get in line and conform". Nope, some of us have a different lifestyle than a corporate drone. Many of us don't want a society where you can't get health care insurance at an affordable rate - - and if you don't have insurance cannot afford to pay cash what a doctor wants for a visit or procedure. There are those who are of a different cloth who are made by the creator for a factory job - not the boardroom. There's plenty of honest hardworking SIMPLE people out there who are hurting, and you answer is to put on a suit and tie and jump on the commuter train? Please..... your logic comes from a classroom.

[-] 1 points by nateabele (4) from Brooklyn, NY 12 years ago

Actually, it seemed like everything @wakeup was suggesting centered around learning things; the implication being that we each have a hand in shaping our future. I don't think this implies anything to do with the idea of being a suit. Some people just find it more productive to actually get out there and do what they can to solve the problem, as opposed to yelling and marching. I think most people can respect that.

[-] 1 points by Echwell (7) from Rijsbergen, NB 12 years ago

The system has become what it is. That does not mean it is the only way, or that the system shoud not be looked at critically and changed when necessary. That even nonprofit orgs depend on this system doesnt make it a good system either. It actually demonstrates the point. Personally i think this revolution is evolution, leading in the era in wich man dares to stop fighting with eachother for personal gain and discover the beauty of true progress. Imagine what mankind could achieve if not busy fighting redicilous wars over nothing, working insane hours to make ends meet, steeling from eachother out of inequality, but able to explore talents, possibilities and differences. That would mean medicine for who needs it, food for all, education for all, equal say in worldwide politics for all, equal economic chances for all. and so much more. I think that is what these people are striving for. It may be diffcult to put in to words, demands or handy oneliners, but it is evolution that we cannot keep abusing eachother and these people dare to speak before they have got all the solutions.

Very interesting movement. I just have to say it's all well and good raising awareness about a certain problem or problems that exist with the current establishment, but unless there is an idea of what the movement aims to achieve and a feasible suggestion of how to get there, it's rather pointless. Just a whole lot of people complaining about a situation they don't know how to change. Marching on Wall Street will do a lot to raise awareness about the situation, but don't think for a minute that the people on the other side of the pickets are really inspired to make a change. My point in a nutshell is: What do you want and how will you get it in order to satisfy or appease your current complaints. Answer that, and we potentially have a movement that could change the world.

[-] 1 points by Faithntruth (997) 12 years ago

We have a nation of hundreds of millions of people. Together we can generate the best solutions, but we have to bring attention to the problems and get the discussion started. This is also the best way to keep from being taken over by special interests, or accused of trying to impose a specific agenda. Americans are smart and together we have the power to fix the problems that big money interests and government have wrought upon us.

[-] 1 points by jbravo84 (2) from Cape Town, WC 12 years ago

I absolutely agree with your sentiments and I understand that occupywallstreet is probably just the beginning of greater things to come. I guess my hope is that is does in fact become more than a shouting platform for problems and that some good solutions come out of it. I've seen a lot of movements in the past that appear to start up just to make a noise and then disappear into the ether again without really having changed anything. I hope this will not be the case for this movement. Eager to see some change. :)

A solid first step in fixing our economic and political woes is to disqualify any person worth more than two million dollars from holding political office. The rich are too corrupted by greed to be an any benefit to the community generally. Putting the rich in government is like turning over the reins of power to a bunch of felons. The American middle class, the true creator of jobs and wealth, should control the government for the people. I look forward to some politician proposing this amendment before the greed of the already wealthy completely destroys our democratic way of life, economy and values. The foundation of our nation is not capitalism but democracy in the form of a Republic. Capitalism is nowhere even mentioned in the American Constitution. Capitalism is a tool of democracy to generate wealth and prosperity. Democracy should not be the tool of capitalism to generate wealth for a few. Capitalism is a beast that must be harnessed to pull the plow for the well-being of humanity. Now is an historic opportunity for hard-working and creative middle class Americans to assert their majority rights against a corrupt and ineffective elite who have brought the country to the brink of ruin.

Latent in every man is a venom of amazing bitterness, a black resentment; something that curses and loathes life, a feeling of being trapped, of having trusted and been fooled, of being the helpless prey of impotent rage, blind surrender, the victim of a savage, ruthless power that gives and takes away, enlist a man, drops him, promises and betrays, and----crowning injury---inflicts on him the humiliation of feeling sorry for himself.......Paul Valery

[-] 1 points by Hhicyclust (2) 12 years ago

It's like this, the king marries a commoner, and the populace cheers. She doesn't even know how to curtsy, but he loves her manners in bed. Why doesn't the king do what his father did, those peasant girls brought in through that secret entrance, that's ho a kingdom works best. But marriage! The king's mother won't come out of her room, and a strange democracy radiates throughout the land, which causes widespread dreaming, a general hopefulness. This is of coarse, how people get hurt, how history gets it's ziggy shape. The king locks his wife in the tower because she's begun to ride into the woods. How unqueenly to come back to the castle like that, so sweaty and flushed. The only answer, his mother decides, is stricter rules----- no whispering in the corridors, no gaiety in the fields. The king announces his wife is very tired and has decided to lie down, and issues an edict that all things yours are once again his. This is the kind of law history loves, which contains it's own demise. The villagers conspire for years, waiting for the right time, which never arrives. There's only that one person, not exactly brave, but too unhappy to be reasonable, who crosses the moat, scales the walls.

The well to do were bailed out by the less fortunate, They have successfully lobbied for tax cuts with favorable loopholes. Apparently this is not enough; they are going after programs geared towards the poor and they are gutting senior citizen retirement benefits. Oh no, this is not enough, they would very much like to abolish the department of education. Why not! It won't affect them since they can afford to send their children to private schools.

FYI-ZUCCOTTI PARK is a private park that allows public access. You can be legally removed if the owner, a big, bad corporation, decides they want you gone. just saying.

[-] 1 points by LionStream07 (4) 12 years ago

Perhaps but the reason the park exist is because of real estate city laws that say some public space needs to be alocated for green space and people's public recreation and use. This is why the park is there. otherwise you will see another building. Property developers or owners, have limits on developement-building of and over land in new york.

Viva La Revolucion! Not a very well thought out post. "We must take the protest to the next level and target wealthy corporations by boycotting all goods and services provided by greedy, corrupt and deceiving corporations and prosecute those responsible for manipulating the public for financial gain, this includes politicians and the wealthy that control them"-Are you paying your cell phone bill? What device are you using to make this post? Who designed and built it and continually improves it? "Remember that for the first time in our history as humans we can communicate with one another anywhere in the world in mere seconds. We don't need them anymore! We can manage the world ourselves"-And how is this possible? Who came up with the technology and who paid for it? Can you get service most anywhere in the US? who builds and maintains that infrastructure? "We can decide by ourselves how to reintroduce all the other "stuff" later -- but first we must unite across the globe to claim all of the earth's natural resources, inventory them and decide together how to manage them"-Nice thought, but try this first. Have everyone there throw EVERYTHING in a central pile and divvy it up. Those includes cell phones, cash, laptops, clothes, blankets, etc, and see if you have full participation. My bet is that you will not, including yourself. This will be a microcosm of what you desire. Now, are you willing to introduce force to get 100% inclusion? If so, then you are no better than any government, If not, then your utopian idea will fail at launch. "Make no mistake, it will HAVE to get WORSE before it can get BETTER. we must be prepared for a long but peaceful transition. Do not take up arms BUT don't be pressured by the threat of jail or excommunication, don't fear when they begin to blame us for ruining the world, they have ruined it, we are going to fix it."- I am not the 1% and I am not the 99% and I will NOT allow my family to suffer in any way because of your groups actions. I WILL take up arms against you and if it requires your extermination, then that is the CHOICE you made. with the collapse of society the lowest of civilization WILL exert their force and dominance on everyone else. The basic services that you rely on and take for granted will be lost. These include clean water, sewage removal, trash removal, food, clothing, etc and with these services gone disease and pestilence will become prevalent. "If we do this without them then we will have no wars and there will be no struggle and we can initiate change in mere days. If we let them convince us that we need to use the systems that they own, control and put in place, including decisions on who owns what then we are doomed. They will simply find to way to manipulate us into accepting another version of a system for which they still own and control."-It has been 2 weeks, what have you accomplished so far? From what I see, not much. You may have support, but it is a far cry from 99%, because 98% of the real population looks at you as being a group who know nothing and are looking for a free ride. As soon as you become very cold and very hungry and your cell phone and internet service is cut off, you will slink back to where it is you came from and be thankful for what you do have.

[-] 1 points by nateabele (4) from Brooklyn, NY 12 years ago

I can't help but feel that this is all a little misdirected. Greed and corruption isn't just a Wall Street condition, it's a human condition; they were just in the right place at the right time. In fact... we, the 99%, have created them.

Our parents' generation sold us a bill of goods called "The American Dream", where everyone is entitled to a house, a car, a university education, and so on. We asked, "but who's gonna pay for all this?" With a big, reassuring grin, Wall Street patted us on the collective shoulder and replied, "Oh, we'll worry about that later."

And we went along with it.

Everything that's wrong in our country right now, with the economy, health care, housing, it all goes back to the creation of debt. Most people think money comes from the Treasury, but that's a myth. Money comes from banks. They create it out of thin air, every time they issue new debt.

That's why we're responsible. That's how we created the 1%. Every time we take out student loans, sign a mortgage, swipe a credit card, we give them more power. Occupying Wall Street is a temporary, minor annoyance at best. And not even for the people at the top.

If you want to hit Wall Street where it hurts, then declare bankruptcy. Stop using your credit card. Take your money out of the stock market and your mutual funds and invest it in your local community.

[-] 1 points by tvcoach911 (1) 12 years ago

If only it were that simple. But, despite Villanova's requirement (20 yrs ago),for math+science every semester, my understanding of the complexities of the convoluted, rubics cube of financial markets was learned from dating a gold trader, whose father was heavily into commodities. And for the last 30 yrs, a handful of greedy, sneaky, brilliant, highly manipulative, , pathollogical narcissists (who hav no conscience or even know what one is) have become most powerful+ thus, most dangerous men in the world..., Amazing that protestors actally fig out, maybe not how, but that Wall Sts Masters of Universe. . sole purpose now is to 'outsmart' EVERYONE,instead of GUIDE us to invest 'well'.. Their ridiculous attempt to control or 'hedge' everything to 'bring about a positive result', is, unfortunely, not real life, and until we demand Wall St get back to making,+ trading REAL things, not imaginary, highly hyped incomprehensible 'financial instuments', we really are doomed!

[-] 1 points by GypsyKing (8708) 12 years ago

They also systematically bought out government and made trillians on fraudulent (mostly military) contracts. To say it's all our fault collectively would be to say the we collectively participated or benefitted from that situation, an assertion that is clearly untrue.

[-] 1 points by imadjdiva (5) from San Diego, CA 12 years ago

In our parents' time, well, my parents' time anyway... the 1960's and 70's, it was FAR easier to achieve the American Dream than it is today. I don't think it's fair to call it a bill of goods. The Bill of Goods was the trickle down voodoo economics of the Reagan years that ushered in a whole new way of thinking for corporations...one in which the shareholder had a larger stake in the company than anyone else...where traditionally, the well being of the shareholders, workers, customers and the community were held in equal regard by a healthy company doing best business practices. All of that was thrown out the window in the 80's and we're living in the consequences of that shift now. We've been here before however.... the wealthy families in the earlier part of the last century took, took, took until they basically broke the bank. We can try to avoid that happening again, or we can throw our hands up, call it the cyclical nature of things and get in the soup line. Me, I'd like to prevent it. I remember the 70's...they were good times. My dad was a hairdresser and we lived in a nice house (not a McMansion...but nice) and I went to private school...you think a hairdresser today can do that for his family? I would call that the American Dream it was a reality...it just hasn't been available for many for too long now.

[-] 1 points by nateabele (4) from Brooklyn, NY 12 years ago

(1) Yes, it took a solid 30 years for the failed policies to catch up with us, as tends to be the case in economics. But it wasn't Reagan's policies, as you suggest, it was Nixon's. Detaching our currency from gold was the first step toward converting wealth from something real to something imaginary. When you're dealing with imaginary things, creating an easily-manipulated system becomes trivial. We're now feeling the effects of this everywhere from the financial markets to the cost of a gallon of gasoline.

As Ron Paul correctly pointed out, the real value of a gallon of gas is still only about a dime. The catch? The dime (as it once was) has to be made of silver. See, it isn't that the cost of gasoline has gone up, it's that the value of our currency has gone down. Way down. Sure, commodities trading can have an impact in the short term, but if you look at the trend over 40 years (i.e. since we broke our last link to the gold standard), the price of oil relative to precious metals is stable. It's our fiat currency that's fallen compared to both.

(2) CEOs have been accountable to boards of directors, and boards of directors to shareholders since well before Reagan. See here: http://movies.netflix.com/WiMovie/The_Corporation/60034810?trkid=2361637 Also, as to your (naive-at-best) jab at wealthy families, I quote Professor Milton Friedman: "So robber barons will always be with us. The crucial question is whether we have a form of economic organization in which one robber baron keeps the other robber baron in check, or whether we have a form of economic and political organization in which one robber baron can help the other robber baron at the expense of the public." [-] 1 points by nateabele (4) from Brooklyn, NY 12 years ago

Well, I'm sure that's not true of most people, and I'm sure that most people realize that money to pay for things has to come from somewhere, which means the taxpayer ends up footing the bill one way or the other, and we're back to square one.

In essence, OWS has many of the same grievances as the Tea Party; grievances which are shared by most of the country. They boil down to the collusion between Washington and big business. I think just about anyone can acknowledge that this is a major problem.

However, it is a mistake to think that more government can solve this for us. The centralization of government power created this problem, because the more centralized the power, the easier it is to manipulate by lobbyists and other big business interests.

[-] 1 points by tf1756 (29) 12 years ago

Remember that is this "revolt" you must break all ranks with the source of the Bankers best friend and that is the White House. And you will also lose any support from the Tparty because if you do shut down Wall Street, they will lose all of their retirement money and they will be come homeless. And you will wipe out Union jobs as the corporations fold and close shop. Not doom and gloom, but you claim to be the 99% but you only represent a small portion of people that have never been in a position to have a job and savings. Cause and effect of shutting down Wall Street? Complete financial collapse of the US. So, tread carefully. if you want support, you must think through each and every act. This country will be taken over by a foreign power if you bring it to complete collapse. Is this what you want? Gangs will control the streets as police will be laid off due to no money. Fires will rage out of control, no fire department. No clean water, no power, no internet. Look at Argentina's financial collapse and the chaos that followed. Most of the inner city gangs have automatic weapons, who will protect you from them? Remember with a total collapse, the military will be disbanded. No pay, and they will protect their families before they deploy anywhere. If you want this, you need to be ready for the consequences and accept responsibility for it
