The Deacons for Defense and Justice is an armed self defense African American civil rights organization in the U.S. Southern states during the 1960s. Historically, the organization practiced self-defense methods in the face of racist oppression that was carried out by Jim Crow Laws; local and state agencies; and the Ku Klux Klan. Many times the Deacons are not written about or cited when speaking of the Civil Rights Movement because their agenda of self-defense, in this case, using violence (if necessary) did not fit the image of strict non-violence agenda that leaders like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. preached about the Civil Rights Movement. Yet, there has been a recent debate over the crucial role the Deacons and other lesser known militant organizations played on local levels throughout much of the rural South. Many times in these areas the Federal government did not always have complete control over to enforce such laws like the Civil Rights Act of 1964 or Voting Rights Act of 1965.

I can just see the analogies being written now between OWS organizing a defense force and the old SA in Germany back in 1920s. This is truly a WTF were you thinking moment.

I can see your point, it was kind of read about them and didn't think about it.

ows neads this like they need a hole in the head! if you want a violent movement start your own! if you confront the government with violence you won't have a chance. the authorities specialize in violence and are extremely well equipped so if you have a death wish be my guest and make the biggest mistake possible and confront the government violently but with your own movement not ows

The Deacons were the reason the Civil Rights movement was able to succeed, the police won't brutalize your protests if you have the means to protect yourself. The Deacons were ready, the freedom riders didn't get bombed in Deacon cities. Bull Connors said he would not have used the hoses if the Deacons had had a chapter in his city.

I wasn't talking about offense, most of the time the fact that the deacons were there was enough, it is idiotic to just stand there and let the cops beat you, it is far smarter to avoid conflict by arriving armed. The cops are like any criminal, the thought of an armed victim is the scariest idea of all. the reason there is such high gang violence is because our laws are designed so that minorities can't buy guns, now only criminals have guns, if minorities were armed, the crime would all but disappear.

No one talks about offense at first, it's all to protect. I think that guy up above is right about the storm trooper image. OWS already has image problems, a little "self defense" army would make everything all better?

the threat of violence by coming to protests armed only heightens the tension in an already tense situation. it would be an extremely bad pr move. btw your post doesn't seem to be too popular, maybe you should start your own movement with a forum and the whole works which will attract like-minded people

There are a large number of anarchists in occupy, though my ideas are, i think unique, social anarchists, ad busters was one of the founders of occupy and many social anarchists are in leadership positions in occupy.

though i invented the concept of revolutionary secession and voluntary federalism, secession taken from the theories of individual secession and dual power. i also am theorize a form of syndicalist agorism.

i'm sure you're ideas are very unique assasin7 but ows has been from the start a non-violent protest movement. if you want violence start your own movement. you cannot beat the state at what they do best.

Yes the state is violence, but i support violence as the last option, with a slow rise in force, i would defend myself from the state, never make an offensive move, as it would violate the rights of individuals to self determination and voluntary association. They state would have to initiate force i would never initiate it.
