"Occupy Wall Street is a people powered movement that began on September 17, 2011 in Liberty Square in Manhattan’s Financial District, ...and aims to expose how the richest 1% of people who are writing the rules of the global economy are imposing an agenda of neoliberalism and economic inequality that is foreclosing our future."

Let's stick to that. Almost everything else you guys keep posting about is alienating the real 99% of People in America.

Not very complex. Simple and to the point.

I'm a veteran of the financial industry as well as the 1960s Vietnam War opposition and author of the book "The Big Investment Lie" (Berrett-Koehler 2007), which warned, before the crisis, about the investment industry and "the massively unproductive transfer of wealth from ordinary lower-middle-income, middle-income, and upper-middle-income investors to the incredibly wealthy." I've just arrived on this site, am not sure I’m in the right place, am not social-media savvy but would like to help, especially with the formulation of policy proposals (that is - I suppose - demands). What should I do?

Welcome. I would stick to the home page here. The forums are somewhat missing the point. Perhaps you can contact some of the organizers of this site and let them know about your book. Feel free to post a link here, as well.

No reason to close the forum. I just find it rather odd that the mission is one thing and every other thing is being focused on. Truth, if more conservatives and moderates do not get on board in very large numbers, this entire cause will simply re-elect the Wall St puppet, Obama and nothing will change. In fact, things will get worse. Much worse. Anybody who supports Obama really needs to see that these are 'his' paramilitary police arresting innocent protestors and busting heads all over this country. A wolf in sheep's clothing, if you will.

Yet, I digress. The 99% must represent the 99% of the People.

I like the spirit of this post. I have fought with people who constantly harp on the Occupation's incoherence, but we do need to focus on and work on the key ideas that are the reason this movement has appealed to so many and may actually be able to make a difference.

Good point. Then perhaps we should close this forum, because, although it has been very useful to date, if our demands are as simple as those expressed above (which may be a very wise approach) all it may serve as from here on out is a place for provacaturs to post things discrediting to OWS.

This is just something I post for consideration.

I am starting to believe you might have a good point about closing the forum hahaha. I cannot believe some of the media coverage, hell-bent on turning this into something that it is not. Personally, I would love to see more signs stating Stop Corporate Welfare and anti-Wall St-related messages. Most everything else is a big turn off. Fix the money/power problem in this country and everything else falls into place, because our communities will prosper, our citizens will prosper. If the true aim of OWS is to restore America, that is how you do it. Wall Street can no longer buy and control our Government. The private (secret) bankers at The Fed are part of this huge problem and if there is any hope in this movement working, it needs to focus on the real issues. Issues that mainstream America (right, left, center, wackos) easily understands. This a dumbed-down nation. Most of the posts in this forum prove that. So keep the message, the goal(s) simple and easy to understand. Use crayons. ;-)

What is neoliberalsim? And which part of the 99% wants what others have without doing the work. Do something and then you can lift someone up rather than putting them down.

[-] 1 points by OkayAndYou (20) 13 years ago

I know what it is, just not sure you do. Are you against neoliberalism, or those who right the rules? Are you ready to accept the "invisible hand"?

[-] 1 points by Mitch333 (93) 13 years ago

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neoliberalism#United_States I am not sure if that link will work.

I have ask again... "agenda of neoliberalism" was supposed to be a unifying phrase?

[-] 1 points by Mitch333 (93) 13 years ago

I am not really concerned with phrases or soundbites or fancy graphics, either. I am concerned about the real "99%" being alienated from the true mission here.

[-] 1 points by TechJunkie (3029) from Miami Beach, FL 13 years ago

A larger chunk of the 99% than you seem to realize are people who still idolize Ronald Reagan. This "neo-liberal" thing is not unifying language.

[-] 1 points by Mitch333 (93) 13 years ago

People who still idolize Reagan will be left behind. It really is that simple.

[-] 1 points by TechJunkie (3029) from Miami Beach, FL 13 years ago

I ask yet again; this is your idea of unifying people?

[-] 1 points by Mitch333 (93) 13 years ago

The actions of Wall St (and the results of Reaganomics) are unifying people. I do not need to. I am not here to change minds.

[-] 1 points by TechJunkie (3029) from Miami Beach, FL 13 years ago

And you're under the impression that you represent everybody in the country who isn't part of the wealthiest 1%? Kind of presumptuous, isn't it?

[-] 1 points by TechJunkie (3029) from Miami Beach, FL 13 years ago

"agenda of neoliberalism" is supposed to be unifying?

Research neoliberalism on this site or wikipedia. I dont cut and paste.

Friend of mine sent me this and ask to pass the word around. I hope people read and take actions:

Time for our legislators to live by their rulings..

Warren Buffett, in a recent interview with CNBC, offers one of the best quotes about the debt ceiling: "I could end the deficit in 5 minutes," he told CNBC. "You just pass a law that says that anytime there is a deficit of more than 3% of GDP, all sitting members of Congress are ineligible for re-election

The 26th amendment (granting the right to vote for 18 year-olds) took only 3 months & 8 days to be ratified! Why? Simple! The people demanded it. That was in1971...before computers, e-mail, cell phones, etc.

Of the 27 amendments to the Constitution, seven (7) took 1 year or less to become the law of the land...all because of public pressure.

Warren Buffet is asking each addressee to forward this email to a minimum of twenty people on their address list; in turn ask each of those to do likewise.

In three days, most people in The United States of America will have the message. This is one idea that really should be passed around.

Congressional Reform Act of 2011

  1. No Tenure / No Pension. A Congressman collects a salary while in office and receives no pay when they are out of office.

  2. Congress (past, present & future) participates in Social Security. All funds in the Congressional retirement fund move to the Social Security system immediately. All future funds flow into the Social Security system, and Congress participates with the American people. It may not be used for any other purpose.

  3. Congress can purchase their own retirement plan, just as all Americans do.

  4. Congress will no longer vote themselves a pay raise. Congressional pay will rise by the lower of CPI or 3%.

  5. Congress loses their current health care system and participates in the same health care system as the American people.

  6. Congress must equally abide by all laws they impose on the American people.

  7. All contracts with past and present Congressmen are void effective 1/1/12. The American people did not make this contract with Congressmen. Congressmen made all these contracts for themselves. Serving in Congress is an honor, not a career. The Founding Fathers envisioned citizen legislators, so ours should serve their term(s), then go home and back to work.

If each person contacts a minimum of twenty people then it will only take three days for most people (in the U.S.) to receive the message. Maybe it is time.

THIS IS HOW YOU FIX CONGRESS!!!!!

If you agree with the above, pass it on. If not, just delete. You are one of my 20+. Please keep it going.

Exactly, let's stick to that, for many more people will come to your side when you are proactive (for “new” Business & Government solutions), instead of reactive (against “old” Business & Government solutions), which is why what we most immediately need is a comprehensive “new” strategy that implements all our various socioeconomic demands at the same time, regardless of party, and although I'm all in favor of taking down today's ineffective and inefficient Top 10% Management System of Business & Government, there's only one way to do it – by fighting bankers as bankers ourselves; that is, using a Focused Direct Democracy organized according to our current Occupations & Generations. Consequently, I have posted a 1-page Summary of the Strategically Weighted Policies, Organizational Operating Structures, and Tactical Investment Procedures necessary to do this at:

http://getsatisfaction.com/americanselect/topics/on_strategic_legal_policy_organizational_operational_structures_tactical_investment_procedures

Join

http://finance.groups.yahoo.com/group/StrategicInternationalSystems/

because we need 100,000 “support clicks” at AmericansElect.org to support a Presidential Candidate -- such as any given political opportunist you'd like to draft -- in support of the above bank-focused platform.

Most importantly, remember, as cited in the first link, that as Bank Owner-Voters in your 1 of 48 "new" Business Investment Groups (or "new" Congressional Committees) you become the "new" Congress replacing the "old" Congress according to your current Occupation & Generation, called a Focused Direct Democracy.

Therefore, any Candidate (or Leader) therein, regardless of party, is a straw man, a puppet, just like today, for it's the STRATEGY – the sequence of steps – that the people organize themselves under, in Military Internet Formation of their Individual Purchasing & Group Investment Power, that's important. In this, sequence is key.

Why? Because there are Natural Social Laws – in mathematical sequence – that are just like Natural Physical Laws, such as the Law of Gravity. You must follow those Natural Social Laws or the result will be Injustice, War, etc.

The FIRST step in Natural Social Law is to CONTROL the Banks as Bank Owner-Voters. If you do not, you will inevitably be UNJUSTLY EXPLOITED by the Top 10% Management Group of Business & Government who have a Legitimate Profit Motive, just like you, to do so.

Consequently, you have no choice but to become Candidates (or Leaders) yourselves as Bank Owner-Voters according to your current Occupation & Generation.

So please JOIN the 2nd link so we can make our support clicks at AmericansElect.org when called for, at exactly the right time, by an e-mail from that group, in support of the above the bank-focused platform. If so, then you will see and feel how your goals can be accomplished within the above strategy as a “new” Candidate (or Leader) of your current Occupation & Generation.
