OAKLAND -- A 24-year old Marine Corps corporal and Iraqi war veteran remained in critical condition at Highland Hospital on Wednesday night after friends said he was hit in the head with a police projectile in Tuesday's Occupy Oakland confrontation.
Here's what happens in Oakland when you exercise your freedom of speech.

if california is a liberal city and this is how power to the people turned out, where do we go from here? there needs to be a plan, working the plan and plan on working.

I asked radio host "Normangoldman" to explain this situation to me of no avail. First, the unionized police, fire, first-responders embraced as a key entity dismissed by the 1 percent- think Madison, Wisconsin. Now, through some strange vortex, the police/keepers of order have become "boots on the ground". Yet, there is no empathy to the fact that local budgets and resources are being stretched to keep the OWS encampments safe. Likewise, the local business entities and people which reside in these zones have been rather giving. I in no way condone brutality in any guise or form. When resources are being diverted from accidents, homicides, and other unseemly local events in order to placate the needs of OWS......stress is mounting. Just another vantage point.
They are not "placating the needs of OWS" by shooting and gassing them. Which reality are you currently in? These are people who are protesting and the violent backlash from the police is over the fact they are in a park passed the time it's suppose to close. That's the only thing the have to cling to.
It's certainly wasteful to expend resources from the police department on peaceful protests but it's damn near idiotic to blame it on the people sleeping in tents.
No placing blame on either, but this is a vantage point which has not been voiced. If people are peaceful/lawful (which by all accounts here appears to be the case) then what or whom is perverting this. I just do not want to witness needless violence.
No actually I'm blaming the police and local politicians for a completely unnecessary raid on a peaceful protest which will cost taxpayers tens of thousands and possibly this man his life.
The blame rests squarely with them. The protesters weren't violent in any way, just exercising their right to speak and express themselves.
Please, basic polemics. One cannot ask for afforded rules to one entity and then suppose under "certain" circumstances rules do not apply.
Are you aware of the concepts of "freedom of speech" and "freedom to assemble"?
Yes, and sadly, there are common perameters to support as such.
the republicans want to be rich forever....
who is a lawyer to say that you can make a country weak for resenting the people who put us in a place where we, the people, can't make an honest living, we have to tear our bonds from each other
I can show you a world where the police will not take charge like this, where everyone cares for one another, we the people! we the people shall be shouted from the rooftops, shout it from your window, and the government shall fear, they shall stop with your abuse, and they shall listen, make the government fear, and you win
San Fran is such a liberal city, Pelosi is from there for goodness sake. How can this happen in San Fran!?
This was in Oakland but your point still stands.
Disgusting. This guy serves in the Marines to protect our's and his own freedom of speech and now he might die because he decided to speak out.
Better him than me
Brave troll has no boundaries.
That sounds like a line from the Lord of the Rings or something.
