Dear fellow Occupiers,
I understand what I’m about to suggest runs slightly counter to the movement. Nonetheless, I think it ought to at least be proposed for discussion and friendly amendment.
I propose we all ---DEPOSE OUR CONGRESSMEN!
There are 33 out of 100 seats opening up in the US Senate in the 2012 election.
All 435 seats in the House of Representatives are up for election in 2012 (this is a HUGE opportunity to reshape the House of Representatives to reflect the values of the Occupy Movement)
If they have served in Congress, they had the opportunity to enact change, and are likely working with the corrupt system. It’s time to remind the Congress they are the only governmental body reliant on the masses for re-election.
People, this is a call to -- OCCUPY CONGRESS.
Imagine, people from all 50 states coordinating General Assemblies at common meeting grounds and holding run-off’s after debates and straw polls, nominating representatives of the people by the people for public office and in turn becoming promoters and spokespeople of a political campaign they had a hand in creating.
The platform for Occupy candidates would be an anti-corruption campaign. All candidates would sign a contract with the people, swearing to steer clear of corruption. The contract would stipulate that an independent body would immediately investigate any suspicion of corruption on behalf of the candidate, and if the candidate were found guilty, he or she would publicly resign immediately.
Any candidate who does not sign this contract would be at a severe disadvantage. They would essentially be saying they are unwilling to take a stance against corruption.
Those of you who are doing the math, realize the Senate only has 100 seats (33 open), and the House of Representatives another 435 (this could be something the new congressmen work to change – how can a country so large be represented by so few?) In turn, I recommend focusing on local bodies of government as vigilantly as the national government. Start a campaign for governor, mayor, or city counsel member.
If the Tea Party has taught us anything, it is that people will say intolerant and nonsensical things. But also, that if Michelle Bachman holds office as a representative of the people in the United States – I know any number of poets, musicians, and teachers -- better suited for the position.

Are you aware of the working group on the 99% Declaration? They have this goal in their sights.

I wasn't aware, but I was sure I couldn't have been the only one thinking this. Glad it's already in motion! Thanks for the info.
You're welcome. This needs to be shared in an articulate way because for OWSers it's a paradigm shift and the knee jerk reaction is rejection. I see OWS as the earthquake and the 99% Declaration as the tsunami that will roll through congress if they don't smarten up fast! Too many people are out of jobs and homes but everybody is out of patience.
Try to steer people away from bickering about what is on The List of Grievances. The only thing that matters now is setting up the National General Assembly (NGA). Whether the LOG has one item or one thousand, the NGA will produce the LOG. Actually with all the effort thats gone into OWS and the ton of work that's going to go into electing the delegates from the (i call them district general assemblies) DGA's and preparing for Philadelphia, I'm confident the LOG will be quite an amazing document.
for some historical reference to the LOG, check out the Suffolk Resolves of 1774. This is the type of document that will come from the NGA, and it was what led to the Declaration Of Independence.

great response! thanks for the information. I only wish I was a few years older, and I'd run myself.

I'm with you brother.
