This is a cool movement but what about corporate greed? MobileExxon, Shell, Texaco/Chevron --- these oil giants are causing just as much disruption in our economic recovery. Every time things begin to turn around the oil giants raise the cost of fuel, which impacts most everything in our lives... petroleum goes into all modes of transportation from our rubber bike/car/truck tires to the seat cover on your bike, the dashboard of your car, the gas, and oil. Those rubber soles on your tennis shoes have petroleum, the medications you use, the plastic forks, etc. all have petroleum and the cost of these items are all influenced by the big oil producers. When a company can post a billion plus dollar quarterly profit in this economy --- we need to start occupying those companies.
If you want to make a permanent statement, stop buying gas or at least cut consumption significantly. Nothing speaks as loud as your dollar. If you drive a vehicle with 6 or 8 cylinders, you are the problem.
Just wait until heavier sanctions set in against Iran, and they decide to close straits of Hormuz. Oil may hit 200 dollars a barrel. Oil markets are a world market, and all merchants make big money off the product because, as you state, oil is involved in damn near everything we use. Closing the straits will crush the world economy and bring us all to our knees.
