Forum Post: Occupy Black Friday anti-capitalist?

The Montgomery Bus Boycott drew the politics of a region and the attention of a nation to the plight of civil rights in the South. It crippled the economy of the city and forced the federal district court to rule Alabama segregation laws illegal. It lasted 385 days.

Occupy Black Friday is one day.

Those who argue that Occupy Black Friday would "hurt working Americans" are woefully uninformed on both the nature and the scope of the boycott.

  1. One day of shopping does not stimulate the economy. It stimulates the stock market. There's a difference. OCCUPY BIG BUSINESS ON NOV 25!!

I think that, rather than abstain from shopping on black friday, we should SHOP LOCAL only. Lets boycott the big box stores and spend money where it really helps, at local businesses. And wear Occupy gear while doing it, to show that we are pro small business.

Don't shop. But to occupy malls and harass shoppers is no better than those who harass women at abortion clinics - telling people to think like you and not allowing them personal choice. Several threads have suggested going into malls.

We're not telling them to think like anyone. We are providing information to them so they can be aware of deception and greed.

Yep. that's what the right wing freaks are doing outside clinics - giving information.

"We must rapidly begin the shift from a thing-oriented society to a person-oriented society. When machines and computers, profit motives and property rights are considered more important than people, the giant triplets of racism, militarism and economic exploitation are incapable of being conquered. A nation can flounder as readily in the face of moral and spiritual bankruptcy as it can through financial bankruptcy."

Dr. Martin Luther King, April, 1967

As Dr. King keenly observed more than 30 years ago, society should encourage its members to look to their relationships with others for fulfillment, but instead, it promises that if we buy the latest gizmo or the snazziest new fashion, then we will be happy and popular.
