Grow food for a sustainable future. There are too many reasons why growing local organic food builds a sustainable future to list here. This activity can be done almost anywhere by anyone with a healthy body. I hope this activity will become part of the occupy movement’s next steps. First of all, it is simple and can start almost immediately as this activity is not dependent on a political or economic system if you start small. There are many small patches of land that will grow food: empty lots in neighborhoods, back yards, front yards, easements, etc. There are methods of growing food that work with the Earth by adding compost directly into the soil, no wooden boxes that cost money and use resources. For information on that, see the book, How to Grow More Vegetables than You Ever Thought Possible on Less Land than You Can Imagine.
This idea, without a doubt, should be encouraged anywhere and everywhere possible. I believe it is vital to the long-term survival of our communities and planet.
I've been doing just that for 32 yrs. on a 8ft X 12ft. area with raised beds.
