In the face of outrage from military veterans, Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel has ordered a review of the Obama-created "Distinguished Warfare Medal" for drone pilots and cyber-warriors. Veterans organizations had complained that the Obama "Nintendo" medal outranked medals for combat bravery, particularly the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star.
Production of the medal, which was established by former Defense Secretary Leon Panetta, was halted by Hagel's order, while Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Gen. Martin Dempsey conducts a 30-day review. None of the medals have yet been awarded.
Hagel's action is widely reported in the press today; the Washington Times has three pieces on it — a news article, an op-ed, and an editorial. The op-ed refers to Obama as a "Nero" and a "tyrant." The editorial notes that drone warriors "risk no more than carpal tunnel syndrome or a blister on the thumb as they manipulate a video-game controller," which, they add, "holds no comparison to a soldier risking life and limb on the battlefield."
