So many people in power just assume that what they’re doing is the “the way it should be,” because it works for them. Other people suffer only because of their own choices. There’s minimal understanding of the fact that there NEVER WAS a level playing field.

I originally wrote the first version of “1959 (I’m not going back)” in 1992, and while there are a few changed verses, the chorus was always the same and the core of the song — about taking advantage of privilege: money, connections, power, and not even considering that you might be doing the wrong thing. Some things just haven’t changed, and even have gotten worse.
