Forum Post: No concrete demands!!!

At this moment of the movement it seems to me it is much more important to wake the people up, to free them of this feverish nightmare of 35 years of neo lib & neo con politics. When the people are awake they will know what to do. But first they have to wake up!

Who is the leader of the movement? I have heard the whole "its everyone's" deal a million times. I may be going from step A to Z here, but hypothetically, what happens if the 1% offers to make a deal or change? Who do they negotiate with?

[-] 1 points by MyHeartSpits (448) 13 years ago

Everyone.

Everything is through the people. We will tell them what to do when we are ready.

Negotiate? What is there to negotiate?

stop war

[-] 1 points by odiug (93) 13 years ago

the public! that is the nice thing about OWS ... no smoky back room deals! The 1% would have to put their position to the public via media ... and we will see if there is any substance to it or not!

[-] 1 points by chigrl (94) 13 years ago

Who is taking the money people are donating? Who is organizing this website? Who is writing the front page articles? The leaders. Just saying the people decide everything and there are no backroom deals doesn't make it true.

[-] 1 points by odiug (93) 13 years ago

Well ... if "the leaders" would spend some on this web site ... tell you the truth ... i'd appreciate it very much ... cause this forum stinks :-( And i do not mean the trolls, it is just not very user friendly.

Here's how we can easily Reform Wall Street: Take away their powers "once again." And a Million People March on The Hill will help get it done!

For example, "We are here Congress because we want to bring REINSTATE the Glass-Steagall Act of 1933 http://www.investopedia.com/articles/03/071603.asp#axzz1aPEc3wX which helped saved our country from the Great Depression by preventing investment companies, banks, and insurance companies from merging and becoming large brokerage firms; instead of just being Banks and Insurance companies--why can't we learn a history lesson here Congress? Btw, why did most of you vote for its final repeal in 1999? http://www.counterpunch.org/2008/09/19/shattering-the-glass-steagall-act (2nd story here)

Think about where we are now, it all started in 1999 with lawmakers like Senator Phil Gramm: CNN's The Ten Most Responsible for Economy Collapse: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gKQOxr2wBZQ&feature=related

Furthermore, we also want you to CHANGE the Commodities Future Modernization Act of 2000 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Commodity_Futures_Modernization_Act_of_2000 BACK to where it was before 2000, which since has deregulated energy markets and consequently allowed for such scams as The Enron Loophole; whereas in the early 2000's Enron Corp. was charging 250 bucks plus for a kilowatt hour...They all when to jail for this. But, the Enron loophole is still not closed, for example, allowing speculators to resell barrels of oil over and over again before it reaches the gas station owner. It's basically, legal gambling at our expense. What were those lawmakers thinking then? What are you thinking now? Either do the right think, or you're part of the 1%."

Why are oil prices high? The Enron Loophole

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zbdtTGYQBMU&feature=related

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PNp0y0SjOkY&feature=related

Rolling Stones Reporter: Truth about Goldman Sachs--how they have cornered the markets--basically, The Enron Loophole and the Repeal of Glass-Steagall Act in 1999. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=waL5UxScgUw

Let's get focused and bring back Glass-Steagall Act of 1933, they got it right 1933, we don't need to REINVENT the wheel because bringing this Act back will create an even playing field once again....and let's finally Close the Enron Loophole, which allowed Enron to charge what they wanted for energy; they went to jail for this; but no one closed the loophole, why? Re-election Monies from the banks and oil companies! The writing is on the wall.

A patient with cancer is dying and his organs are losing functions.

The doctor said to the relatives, "I can give medicines to support his organs. Tell me which organ you want to support."

The relatives said, "I want him cure."

The doctor replied, "No. I cannot give you the cure unless you have $1 million. I can only support his organs. And I cannot both support his organs and give him the cure. I cannot do both. Now, tell me what you want."

The relatives said, "I don't have $1 million but I want him cure."

The doctor said, "I am sorry, you can only tell me which organ you want to support. Tell me now!!"

p.s. if ows is smart, gets people to join the movement(the $1 million) and you will have the cure for the cancer

I think people are starting to wake up, i think the original movement that we all stand behind has given us cause to rise up and speak the mind of the people. If some who support the movement or individual GAs want to create a list of demands they have agreed upon as a whole, let them under the guides that these are their own GA's desires, or maybe have all the GAs that want to participate in a collective draw up of demands do so if they so desire. The fact is that some Occupy Wall Street participants want to eventually have a list of demands, while others do not. Since OWS stands for true democracy then shouldnt each GA be permitted to chose whether they wish to have a list of demands, and likewise those GAs that do not want demands remain demand free. Iduno just a thought, please feel free to chime in and educate me... :)

They are awake, but it won't last. This thing needs to get organized or it will fizzle out.

[-] 1 points by nordr (8) 13 years ago

I second this. People are beginning to care about income inequality. Nobody cares about 9/11 truthers or how the working man needs to RISE UP, etc.

Start with the big issue. Stick to the big issue. It's the one thing we all agree on.

How about this for a concrete demand. This would end the corruption of politians & the millionaires of wall street that have them in their pockets! Congressional Reform Act of 2011

  1. No tenure/ No pension A congressman collects a salary while in office and receives no pay when they are out of office. 2.Congress (past, present & future) participates in Social Security. All funds in the Congressional Retirement fund move to the Social Security system immediately. All future funds flow into the Social Security system, and Congress participates with the American People. It may not be used for any other purpose. 3.Congress can purchase their own retirement plan just as all American's do. 4.Congress will no longer vote themselves a pay raise. Congressional pay will rise by the lower of CPI or 3%. 5.Congress loses their current healthcare system and participates in the same healthcare system as the American People.
  2. Congress must equally abide by the same laws they impose on the American People. 7.All contracts with past & present Congressman are void effective 1/1/12. The American People did not make these contracts with Congressmen. Congressman made all these contracts for themselves. Serving in Congress is an honor not a career. The founding Fathers envisioned citizen legislators, so ours should serve their term(s) then go home and back to work. THIS IS HOW YOU FIX CONGRESS! PASS IT ON, IF ENOUGH AMERICANS DEMAND THIS WE CAN MAKE IT HAPPEN.

The following was posted by a commentator on CNN and I thought it was brilliant:

Here’s a few Modest Proposals for an Occupy Wall Street agenda:

  1. Congress must put job creation before partisan politics. These fools have been fiddling while the world burns.
  2. The three securities ratings agencies—Fitch, S&P and Moody’s—must be held accountable for malfeasance on their part which led to the financial collapse of 2007-2008.
  3. The repeal of the Gramm–Leach–Bliley Act of 1999. This ill-conceived legislation repealed the last standing provisions of the Glass-Steagall Act of 1933 which, for sixty-six years, had prevented commercial banks from acting as investment banks.
  4. Amend the U.S. Constitution to limit political campaign donations to ten percent of U.S. median household income and to differentiate the rights of citizens from those of corporations.

these jobs need to be health care, environmental care and alternative energy production

Begin by abolishing income tax. This oppressive tax is already embedded in the cost of american produced goods. A national sales tax would apply to all but American manufactured goods would cost less or the same because the imbedded cost of imposed taxes would be removed. Imports will cost more. Hence American goods will be competitive in America and good manufacturing jobs will return. Also, it will get Uncle Sam out of our personal business.

[-] 1 points by odiug (93) 13 years ago

Ahhhh herman cains pizza plan of 999 becomes even simpler and is left with 99 :-D Nice .... the problem wit sale tax is it is one of the most unjust taxes there are since it hits the poor and lower middle class the most! The second problem is, it amplifies the competition of nations to lower taxes ... one of the reasons we are in this mess ... especially if it comes to the public deficit. Who would stop other nations to abolish their income tax and what tax is next? At the end we would have no government left and democracy fails!

The Federal Reserve and Bank of America Initiate a Coup to Dump Billions of Dollars of Losses on the American Taxpayer

http://www.washingtonsblog.com/2011/10/the-federal-reserve-and-bank-of-america-initiate-a-coup-to-dump-hundreds-of-billions-of-dollars-of-losses-on-the-american-taxpayer.html

1.The bank holding company (BAC) is moving troubled assets held by an entity not insured by the public (Merrill Lynch) to the Bank of America, which is insured by the public

  1. The banking rules are designed to prevent that because they are designed to protect the FDIC insurance fund (which the Treasury guarantees)
  2. Any marginally competent regulator would say “No, Hell NO!”
  3. The Fed, reportedly, is saying “Sure, no worries” by allowing the sale of an affiliate’s troubled assets to B of A
  4. This is a really good “natural experiment” that allows us to test whether the Fed is protects the public or the uninsured and systemically dangerous institutions (the bank holding companies (BHCs))
  5. We are all shocked, shocked [sarcasm] that Bernanke responded to the experiment by choosing to protect the BHC at the expense of the public.

Or to use a traffic rules analogy : A Stop sign does not tell you where to go ... it just tells you you have to stop what you are doing!

[-] 1 points by rohjo (92) 13 years ago

You say it right--simple, clear and true. Keep saying it. It's critical.

The history of movements, until now, has been that they've been diluted by a myriad of demands, all good, perhaps, but divisive in their different directions. Elite-sponsored NGOs and other organizations work to make it so. This time is unique. Hope that the popularity and power of the simple message of #OWS is beyond containment.

"Stop, hey, what's that sound? Everybody look what's going down."

["... mostly say, hooray for our side ..."]

What's been your experience in Germany? My son recently returned from there and said demonstrations are now a way of life in Germany.

I'm an American who immigrated to NYC thirty years ago. LOL
