I saw this floated in a thread here and it stuck with me. I know a lot of people are taking their money out of the national banks for Nov 5th, which is a good movement, but what about people who don't have Credit Union options, or who are too busy trying to survive to take a day to switch their money?
Since all the banks seem fired up to start charging more for credit and debit transactions, how about a National Cash-Only Day? A day where everyone only pays cash and abstains from using debit or credit cards. Getting cash out of ATMs is still fine, they're not proposing a surcharge for that (yet) - just the point-of-purchase transactions. It will take some people to plan ahead... you know, like we did before every place had credit card machines.
It's not an either-or situation with the Credit Union movement, in fact, it ties in nicely. It's easy and it's something my Mom can do. Enough with the polling, this will show exactly how many people are fed up with the system, and it's focused on something I think the entire 99% can agree on: usurious bank fees.
Anyone with me on this?
BAM
In our house since my layoff due to company closure in 2008 almost every day is 'cash' day! A further 'twist' to this is that 95 to 99% of the time when we fuel up it's usually whatever ONE Gallon of gas costs, we only fill the tank full and topped off once every other month(it's not a good idea to run any vehicle on 'near empty') The rest of the time we walk or order what we need by phone or Internet.
It's our silent Protest by Pocketbook that others might want to adapt since by inflating the cost of gas many are immobilized anyway-when was the last time many of us took a couple of hours drive with our families for less than $20 or a cross country drive for summer vacation? Now such a trip would cost several hundred and few take such trips anymore, they were more common 30+ years ago, even teen and college age took them and used our public parks such as Yellowstone and Yosemite more often and now many other parks are closed due to lack of use/revenue since people don't drive as much for recreational reasons which is sad since the American pastime of day trips to nature can be a great stress reliever!
Make as many of your days 'cash only' days and while you're at it, fuel up 3 to 5 days of the week with exactly ONE gallon of gas and walk or cycle the rest until either the price goes down or the SPENDING POWER of your dollar goes up enough to equal what should-$3 to $4 per gallon should be .75c to no more than $1.75 per gallon and minimum wage should allow rental of a 1 bedroom apartment and the basics of living unaided by private or public assistance.
My father knew in the 1970's that this day of our devalued lifestyles and currencies would come and even though many laughed at his ideas he was right but off by about 20 years!
