Forum Post: My story - why I support Occupy

I work for a living. I will never get rich doing what I do and that's okay with me. Before this job I lost a house to foreclosure after losing a job in insurance processing. I don't blame anyone for that. I have had hard time in my life. I've had to sell plasma for food and gas. My family was homeless for a few days.

I don't blame anyone for any of this. Life has its ups and downs. I worked a bunch of minimum wage jobs, freelanced on the internet, and did what I had to do. When I lost my last minimum wage job (right at the start of the recession) I couldn't find work so I went overseas to find work. I missed my family, but I busted my ass and saved up enough money to go back to school and get my teaching license.

I do not blame anyone for my financial struggles or the problems in my life.

I am absolutely against a political system that ignores the well being of working people and only cares about big business. The ultra wealthy and the special interests own our government from top to bottom. Lobbying is legalized bribery.

I don't have a sob story. I have a cause. I'm not asking for a handout, I am demanding freedom.

I want government to stop trying to run people's lives and I want corporations to stop running the government.

Here's how the right think: While they loot the world the rest of us should just shup up and work our asses off, getting only mist and dust in return.

I want to get UNION money out of politics...you with me????

[-] 1 points by nucleus (3291) 13 years ago

I want to get ALL money out of politics.

[-] 1 points by Teacher (469) 13 years ago

Yes. No money in politics. Period. End of story, no exceptions

[-] 0 points by MikeyD (581) from Alameda, CA 13 years ago

LoL. You couldn't have picked a better guy to post that message on. Teacher wants ALL money out of politics (Except for Unions, Rachel Maddow, Lawrence O'Donnel, Ed Shultz, Michael Moore's movies, MoveOn.org, Accorn, and George Soros)

[-] 1 points by MattLHolck (16833) from San Diego, CA 13 years ago

if everyone voted the corps would have to payoff everyone

[-] 1 points by Teacher (469) 13 years ago

All money out of politics. Unions too. Making a movie isn't a political campaign, neither is a talking head on a news show. Raphel Maddow can't demand favors from congressmen like big donors can.

[-] 0 points by MikeyD (581) from Alameda, CA 13 years ago

Right. So you are telling me the funder of the swift boat vets for truth never had a sit down with George Bush to talk about "Favors"?

[-] 1 points by Teacher (469) 13 years ago

That is EXACTLY the kind of thing that should be illegal. An outside group raising money to influence a campaign.

[-] 0 points by MikeyD (581) from Alameda, CA 13 years ago

awww. Didn't you just say Maddow is not an issue? Thanks for living up to the exact description I made of you at the top of this thread.

[-] 1 points by Teacher (469) 13 years ago

What the hell are you talking about. I was discussing 527s

[-] 0 points by MikeyD (581) from Alameda, CA 13 years ago

Making a movie isn't a political campaign, neither is a talking head on a news show. Raphel Maddow can't demand favors from congressmen like big donors can

You then 180 and say, Swift Boat Vets for Truth, bad for publishing a book and a documentary.

Quit being such a hypocrite.

Teacher, Sorry about your luck. I'm happy to see you taking some time to be a patriot and be part of the greater social issue. I hope your employment forecast is looking up. I'm underemployed for nearly 18 months and feel for your condition.

[-] 1 points by Teacher (469) 13 years ago

My employment prospects are fine. I work hard for my money but its what I like doing.

Yay I am with you.

Rich people get good schools, poor people get bad ones. Prisons are way stations for poor kids.

[-] 1 points by Teacher (469) 13 years ago

True. But also remember that good parents make good schools. All the money in the world won't help if the parents don't care.

[-] 1 points by frankchurch1 (839) from Jersey City, NJ 13 years ago

Treat all Parents equal and you won't have problems. Jonathan Kozol is good on this issue.

[-] 1 points by April (3196) 13 years ago

Indeed.
We want to get the money out of our government. Because it is our government too!

No one is really asking for a hand out, they are asking for exactly what they have been getting, attention focused on the issues that keep getting 'swept under the rug' or never brought into the light of day.

There are instances where it is politic to over state a point to even get a glimmer of understanding.

I'm curious because I do not like the present direction of government, at ALL. On the other hand, I don't like the direction of "We the people," either.

[-] 0 points by VladimirMayakovsky (796) 13 years ago

How did the political system fail you? Too low price for plasma?

[-] 1 points by Teacher (469) 12 years ago

I have made it clear I am not blaming my past financial struggles on anyone

[-] 0 points by happybanker (766) 13 years ago

The children at your school are blessed to have you as their mentor. May the best days of your life begin tomorrow.

[-] 1 points by Teacher (469) 13 years ago

Thank you sir

Can we have freedom of school choice?

[-] 1 points by Teacher (469) 13 years ago

Sure, public, private, charter, magnat. There are lots of choices right now. Homeschooling, internet schools from home, etc.

[-] 0 points by Rob (881) 13 years ago

Can I keep my share of the money they spend on each student? We home school and my kids are doing quite well.

[-] 1 points by Teacher (469) 13 years ago

I don't set you local tax code. That is a topic under debate in educational circles, is it fair to make people pay for schools they don't use? Its a fair question.

[-] 1 points by Faithntruth (997) 13 years ago

The point of collecting from everyone is the fact that we all have a stake in the education of the population, not just parents.

To rob: Stop paying that school tax if you want, but dont bitch when the kids grow up to be unemployable, unskilled, and without an understanding of civic responsibility, because schools still do teach this. They will find ways to survive, but it will not be good for a peacfeful community of responsible adults. Just about anyone can become a parent, but being great parents is not a prerequisite to producing offspring, so in the end you only hurt your own childrens future.

[-] 1 points by Teacher (469) 13 years ago

Agreed to a point, I'm just saying that there is a debate going on and both sides have a valid argument to make.

[-] 1 points by Faithntruth (997) 13 years ago

Discussion is good...!

[-] 1 points by PandoraK (1678) 13 years ago

Then can we get tax dollars out of private schools? I mean fair is fair isn't it?

I pay taxes which support schools and haven't had a student in a school in over 20 years, and I'm not the one complaining.

Corporations involvement in government is overrated. Government involvement in corporations isn't.

[-] 1 points by Teacher (469) 13 years ago

Yeah like those swell regulations that keep speculators from crashing the economy...oh, the banks got the gov to get rid of those.

[-] 0 points by JohnnyO (119) 13 years ago

The government under Clinton green lighted the banks: "everyone should own a home". Most banks were threatened by the government that if they didn't make loans to certain groups, they'd be sued. Andy Cuomo was the enforcer.

Government is the problem. Ditto for "everyone should go to college". Now we have a student loan problem.

[-] 1 points by Teacher (469) 13 years ago

And no corporation lobbied the government to make those changes for their own profit? Like banks that lent the money or processed the student loans for a 30% fee?

[-] 0 points by JohnnyO (119) 13 years ago

Funny. My broker never ever recommended a banking or insurance stock.

I'm glad he didn't.
