Well, the US embargo on Cuba might have contributed a little to their poverty.
Don't get hung up on 'Capitalism good, Communism bad'. To say that, you have to recognize communism and capitalism for what they really are. Forget the propaganda that all Communism is like the Stalin-era Soviet Union, or Mao's China.
What is Communism? It's where goods such as land are held in communal ownership for the benefit of all. Not the state, but the group. In the United States, the Shakers were Communist.
Stone age cultures, including the North American Indians, had communism for thousands of years and they were happy with it. They had no concept of land as 'property'.
Capitalism in the United States does not have to mean 'crony capitalism', or a society where everything is run by mega-corporations. There is a name for a society where the corporations run the government, and it's called 'Fascism'. Look up this Mussolini quote 'Fascism is the fusion of state and corporate powers".
Is the U.S. capitalist? Then why is everything you buy made in 'Communist' China?
