What other good demonstration/protest songs would you recommend?

My hometown by Bruce Springsteen was appropriate for the 70s, and even more so nowadays. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QukG3mLHstE&feature=related

(his Ghost of Tom Joad works too) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T4gra-OuONI

This is a good cover of a springsteen song by tom morrello the lead guitarist for rage against the machine.

"imagine if no possessions, i wonder if you can, no need for greed or hunger, a brotherhood of man, imagine all the people sharing all the world...you may say that i'm a dreamer BUT i'm not the ONLY one.. but i hope some day you'lljoin us and the world will live as one!" :) occupy!!

I hadn't thought of that verse :) It's a perfect fit for OWS

[-] 1 points by LIVE4CHANGE (37) 13 years ago

i know! i thought the same thing.... an amazing verse for OWS. i think it's what we all are trying to say to one another as we unite. oh john lennon...!

How do you know if you are wise? If your words transcend time and the meaning still holds up, even after being said more than 40 years ago.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yI0_w9aV8G0 john butler-i used to get high for a living !!

"i used to get high for a living, thinking that my destiny was outta my control, i used to get high for a living, theres a lot of different reasons and i'll tell you so...economic, rational, calling fouls with the workers, just trying to make it pay, cost cutting, head butting, big business, do what they like and you do what they say...."

IMAGINE- john lennon

Oh man...anything by Rage Against the Machine

[-] 1 points by galindooccupysandiego (14) from San Diego, CA 13 years ago

Tom Morello should get the guys together and make a music event in solidarity with OWS!

[-] 1 points by NYCJames (113) 13 years ago

Spoon is a good call. :)

I'd suggest "Working Class Hero" but it's down-beat, and has political connotations I'm not sure you want.

Dog Days are Over by Florence and the Machine? Thatcher Fucked the Kids by Frank Turner? Still Here by the Goo Goo Dolls? God's Gonna Cut You Down by Johnny Cash? Liberty by Grateful Dead? ABC's by K'Naan? Stand Up by the Flobots? Sing by Travis? Paper Planes by MIA?

I've got tons of options for you. :)

[-] 1 points by galindooccupysandiego (14) from San Diego, CA 13 years ago

I was considering that song! I actually made a sign for the march referencing Working Class Hero: "you're still fucking peasents as far as I can see"

[-] 1 points by NYCJames (113) 13 years ago

It's a great song, with a great message, but quite a depressing sound, and some people may not like the message.

You could always go with "God's Gonna Cut You Down" by Johnny Cash. :p

Yeah, I think that song is a little bit more powerful;)

The awesome thing about music is that it unites people, how unbelievable would it be if a huge concert in solidarity with OWS took place that included Rage Against the Machine, System of a Down, Radiohead and other bands that I believe would be great supporters of our movement. Maybe that would happen down the road. Yes, I am a dreamer and so are the rest of the 99%. We will make our dream come true

[-] 1 points by stevilism (130) 13 years ago

I can see a concert happening...this would shift the movement into overdrive. In time...in time.

ugh! i completely feel you. i listened to this song and then saw tom morello (guitarist from rage) at occupy wall street on live stream the next morning. i was literally in shock that i even thought that the night before. since they've been broken up apparently one of them is in thailand and what not but maybe MAYBE all would unite and head to wall street to support a cause that they've ALL sang about while others considered them to be like misfits of society....pssssh they were right all along and us that listened knew itttt. :)

[-] 1 points by galindooccupysandiego (14) from San Diego, CA 13 years ago

They haven't broken up, they played at L.A Rising (a music festival they created this year) that is the reason why I believe that it might actually be a possibility, they could easily become the Lennon of this generation's revolution

[-] 1 points by LIVE4CHANGE (37) 13 years ago

really... i was told they werent playing together anymore. hmm my bad! wow that just made me SO much more happier and uplifting in the idea that it IS possible. that would be amazing and grasp more peoples attention bc like what was said before.. music unites people, so if people arent listening to fellow citizens, they'll listen to music!

[-] 1 points by mgiddin1 (1057) from Linthicum, MD 13 years ago

Yeah, I love his music! He has a great voice that reminds me of the grunge sound out of Seattle in the early 90's.

gates of eden? ~dylan

[-] 1 points by LIVE4CHANGE (37) 13 years ago

and the who wants to be 'filthy f&8kin rich' part actually states the issues that we face today. i watched this video last week and the next day i go on the live stream and tom morello was at occupy. so ironic and awesome.
