Lying is addictive. As a communal activity, there is nothing like it. For example:
-- The death of Mrs. Leola Seeley Anderson.
-- Bishop Jean-Félix-Albert-Marie Vilnet.
-- "Albert Marie."
-- The whole of the door-to-door retail "drunken priest" scam.
What we've got with all that is a central element of the personality that Mitt Romney presents to the American public. As much a fantasy as the talking angels and copper plates or the space ships you find with Scientology.
Romney, then 21, missed a turn with his overloaded Citroën. A woman was killed because she didn't have a seat belt. So a priest was blamed and all manner of lies accrued to the tale over the next four decades.
There is no barrier between true and false. Romney and Co. recognize what is useful to them, frame by frame as they go through life.
What a sad denial of their own basic humanity -- an ignorance of the ancient admonition that a lie requires a drop of hatred.
