I know most of you think more members of congress is wrong. However the less there are the less democracy flourishes. Think of it like this; if you went for a job interview and there were three people on the pannel, what is the likelyhood that one of the three pannelists would give the job to a family member or somebody they knew? If there were ten pannelists then that likelyhood just decreased substantially. At the time of the Constituion there were 63 House Representatives and 26 Senators. According to the 1780 census there were 3.9 million residents - which meant less than 50,000 citizens per represenative (not to mention that women, blacks and men who didnt own land couldnt vote). Now there are 435 members of the House and 100 Senators, totalling 535 for a population of 300 million - about 500,000 citizens for every Representative. The last time that number has increased was 1913. If we want to limit the amount of unjustified authority that these politicians have in Washington, then we need to dilute their numbers - which will lead to less corruption, briberies, nepotism (more likely that the job you interviewed for will go to somebody the pannelists knows). More tax payers' money goes to pay non-elected staffers of the Rep. than to people we 'elect'. The more representation we have, the more of a voice we have in Washington.

It would just be more candidates for people to not bother to vote for. Increasing the number of elected representatives won't make government more responsive to your concerns. Increasing the number of VOTERS will.

True. But it would reduce the amount of unjustified authority. Plus, people dont vote because the are disillusioned, turned-off because they feel that their vote doesnt matter. If they had direct contact with their representative with more parties to represent their constituents' needs more intensely, then you would have more particiaption... Again, closer together than farther apart.
