A Montreal man has died of gunshot wounds after getting caught up in a violent family feud in southern Egypt three days ago.
The Egyptian news service Bikya Masr said Jean-François Pelland lived in Cairo, where he was a teacher and football coach.
It said Pelland, 24, was touring southern Egypt with a friend when members of a feuding family opened fire on his car Wednesday.
An Egyptian security official said the armed men opened fire directly at the car after the driver refused to stop at an illegal checkpoint in the town of al-Samata.
Pelland died in hospital Saturday. His students have expressed sadness online over the news of his death.
Family feuds and violent revenge attacks are common in southern Egypt, where many families take the law into their own hands and refuse police intervention.
Canada's Foreign Affairs Department said it was aware of media reports concerning a Canadian citizen in Egypt.
Department spokeswoman Claude Rochon said consular staff were working on the matter and were "offering assistance as appropriate."
It's in the GA minutes.
GA minutes? Don't know what that means.
Understood.
So why post the misleading title?
It isn't. Thanks.
Maybe I missed it, but where is it mentioned that Pelland was part of OWS? Plus, since he lived in Cairo why would you post that OWS sent him to Egypt?
It's in the GA minutes.
