By looking beyond the complex, buried assumptions that form the legal and regulatory framework of the day to day operations of imbedded, complex bureaucracies, the occupy Wall Street movement reaches beyond popular binaries of economic and political pragmatism or “good sense”. The OWS movement inserts the void of novelty into a depoliticized culture that has become too cynical to dream. The OWS movement is utopian, in the classical sense. What is important about utopias is that they establish an intellectual space into which mechanisms of power might expand. In a utopia, the point isn’t how – the point is NOW! The OWS movement has two things on its side.
- It does not care to engage with anything other than the question of inequity. They dare to ask the question “what is Wall Street for?”
- The members are social-media savvy.
