Why don't we do what Truman did after WWII convert gun factories to appliance factories.

No one should be surprised. If a person is a Republican their word cannot be trusted ever. No republican, who runs for office or just votes that way is truthful. The poroblem begins when you take the word of a Republican.

A very sad question-
would you make that statement if the 50 teabaggers elected two years ago were 50 progressives.
We have 100 days to try to fix it.

McCain praised tax cuts he voted against, when he wanted the nomination.

It is hard to imagine the left abandoning it’s “they’re all bad” mojo long enough to get real progressives in Washington, (outside of a couple).

It is a fair question. Would we be better off with a clearly left leaning government?

I believe we would be, especially if we continued a more or less free enterprise system. I believe the only way to maintain a healthy balance in such a system is for the government to favor the people, as the economy will favor the wealthy.
