Forum Post: Mayor Bloomberg and his tacticians are feeling pretty confident right now. There are a lot of pre-victory high fives going around the office. He feels like he's played a great game of chess. BUT THE MAYOR FORGOT 7 KEY THINGS :) ....

This content is user submitted and not an official statement

We have a spirit that dogs can't bite. - MLK

No lie can live forever. - MLK

Truth crushed to earth rises up. - MLK

The moral arc of the universe bends toward justice. - MLK

"First they ignore you. Then they laugh at you. Then they fight you. Then you win." - Gandhi

"Sooner or later but mus' The dan going to bus' and everyone will break out And who will stop them? The force? What force can stop this river of people who already know their course." - Bongo Jerry (Rastafarian poet)

"And now we lay our case before the entire world. Whether we win or whether we die, freedom will rise like the sun through the morning clouds." - Breyton Breytonbach before being sentenced in court for his non-violent direct action activity in South Africa.

PS - Mr. Mayor - You know that $12,000 antique globe you have on that fancy stand next to your desk in your office? Take a moment to gaze at it. Seriously. Pour yourself a scotch, give it a spin and think about this: Tomorrow you will attempt to evict peaceful protesters from a park (protesters the clear majority of Americans support according to today's CBS News poll). On the next day, Saturday, 600 of those cities on your snazzy globe will be occupied. Worldwide Mr. Mayor. And do you know what two words will come out of their mouths rather often? "BLOOMBERG EVICTION".

It's not going to look good when you drag off peaceful protesters. It never does. Rub your eyes my brother. You are about to lose. For we have a spirit dogs can't bite. And all you have is that scotch in your hand and a spinning globe.

I'm here to tell you the truth man. You can't stop that globe from spinning. We have more cameras and media outlets than you do. The game has changed. You know all these movements across the nation and the globe are linked up now right? And who is going to stop them? The force? Ha! What force can stop a river of peope who know their course?

Hold your ground. We have a right to peaceful assembly. (And remember: the U.S. is occupying Iraq illegally!)

All Americans should stand up with the Occupy Wall St. protestors RIGHT NOW. Recognize the divide-and-conquer strategy of the two-party system -- the right/left paradigm. There are no parties in the constitution.

It’s not a free market if it involves force, tyranny, slave labor, overthrow of governments, war. Bankrupting America, robbing Americans of jobs. Where is the freedom?

Chris Hedge’s says, “The criminal class in this country has seized power [and the protestors], in the true definition of the political spectrum, are conservatives in this sense: they call for the rule of law -- they call for the restoration of the rule of law. And what’s happened is that the real radicals have seized power and they are decimating all legal impediments to the creation of a neo-feudalistic corporate city, one in which there is a rapacious oligarchic class, a thin managerial elite. And two-thirds of this country live in conditions that increasingly push families to subsistence level.”

One party is the stick that threatens and whips us into shape and the other is the carrot that waves promises in our faces to get us to move the way they want. This country needs either more new parties or none.

[-] 2 points by therising (6643) 13 years ago

Right on. Hold tight. And remain peaceful and non-violent. And remember, the whole world is now watching the whole scene in high definition. There are so many cameras trained on that site that they can't afford to slip once or they'll look completely foolish. And truthfully, how do you look anything other than foolish dragging peaceful protesters out of a park?

We're going to win this if we stay out and remain completely non-violent. We have more cameras and more media outlets. The whole game has changed.

Slave labor would mean you are required to have a job. You aren't. Just because you don't make the money you want? This is absurd. Nobody stole an american job. Free Trade shipped your jobs overseas, and the Hispanic Influx took the rest good luck.

Btw did you post this on a computer made in America?

It is important to remain non-violent. Sit tight tomorrow morning but remain non-violent. This is crucial for maintaining ongoing support from the masses.

No question about it. That is paramount.

Your attitude is odd. You are part of the 99% and yet you do the bidding of the 1%. Why is that? Open your heart. Embrace your fellow citizens who love you and you will be free.

Wow, 600 cities! I Googled last night and found the protest is coming to my state as well. :)

Outwitting Bloomberg: Not that hard to do. See here. Because there's more of us than there are of him and his cronies. And, we're connected.

http://globalguerrillas.typepad.com/globalguerrillas/2011/10/bloomberg-vs-occupy.html

Mayor Bloomberg is moving to shut down Occupy Wall Street at Liberty Square tomorrow at 7 AM.

The ruse he is using: the need to clean the "park." He has promised that Liberty Square will be reopened after the cleaning but nobody will be allowed to set up anything in park, nor will sleeping bags be allowed (click the sheet to the left for larger version).

This is going to get interesting. Will be working up some ideas for how this could play out. Let's start off with an assumption. This is Bloomberg vs. Occupy. One mind vs. many minds. The goal is to coerce him into changing his mind. Dissuade him. Get inside his OODA loop.

  • Go straight for him. Maximize the eviction's taint on Bloomberg's personal brand. Personalize the protest/eviction by attaching the blame to him personally. Pierce his shield of bureaucratic impersonality. Brand the eviction with the name: Bloomberg. This is/will be a global stage, use it.
  • Confuse him. Lots and lots of Flash Mobs. Shut down bridges and major streets. Overwhelm with volume/speed. Non-violent disruption. As soon as police arrive in force, disperse and reassemble at new location. Bikes + Kids. Disrupt, disrupt, disrupt. More flashmobs = more disruption. As long as the square is under attack, keep the city tied in knots. NOTE: If they lock down the area, flashmobs are the best way to participate (and get some exercise).
  • Connect with more people than him. Best way to do this: Eyes in the sky. Get a camera/cameras above Liberty Square. Stream the feed. The better the quality the more impact it will have. It will play across the world. Think about how important AJs video feed over Tahrir was when things got hot. Better yet, get AJ to cover it and stream it.

If you have additional ideas, add them below. Good training in tactical thinking.

Hoisted from the comments:

The flashmob tactic was tried here in Panama couple of years ago by the SUNTRACS construction workers union, and with very small groups pre-planted all over the city they drove the police absolutely crazy. Police would show up at location A, mob would disperse immediately, two text messages and now TWO flashmobs would block streets at different locations. They never followed up with it (preferring massive marches to display force) but it worked very well and with much less people than #ows has available. [courtesy: Okke]

Good post.

Also, get inside the police "decision cycle" by encouraging members of the police to leak documents about illegal activities in these crackdowns.

Follow the police. Gently encourage them to help us! Even if they don't leak info, the police bosses will be less likely to send in the police when 10 OWS protesters are connecting with each policeman and persuading them to join the cause! Females will be a BIG help in this regard!

The owner of the park is Brookfield Properties. Their flagship property is the World Financial Center which sits on the other side of the trade center, across rte9A. They are the group of highrise buildings with the green roofs. Go there during business hours and they will beg you to sleep in the park as long as you stay way from their WFC.

Definitely a place for the overflow crowds to gather. It seems word of this is spreading.

Maybe the Mayor should just hand out orange vests, poker sticks, and trash bags, and have the OWS crowd clean the park. Hell pay em to do it.

Or wait, maybe OWS should have requested to do this out of thier own interest?

[-] 1 points by therising (6643) 13 years ago

Occupy Wall Street has kept the park clean. This is a tactic by the mayor to get these folks out of the park. Duh.

[-] 1 points by xk2600 (14) from Tulsa, OK 13 years ago

Not insinuating OWS hasn't. But if the city is concerned with the cleaning, wouldn't it be better to take up the initiative than resist? Take the power from the Mayor?

Just figured I'd help strategize. While I don't agree with some of the more esoteric and socialist ideas being tossed around, I do agree there is a big problem, that this mass chaos has brought to light.

The Tax code is a joke, and needs to be greatly simplified.

The gov't should have never been writing loans to banks and business to "bail them out".

The general public is too stupid as a whole to form an opinion, which is why the Two Party system has ruled for so long. The chaos of this event is a perfect example. Nobody even knows what the OWS is pro or against.. except that the rich are rich and we don't have jobs.

I want help composing a song for OWS! It is to be sung to the music of "California Dreaming" by the Mamas & the Papas.

It starts like this: All the news is Bad.

Chorus: The news is bad!

From New York to LA.

Chrous; From NY to LA.

Occupying Wall Street across the USA.

Coming to New York.

Chorus: Coming to New York.....

Can you help me finish the song????

[-] 1 points by CarryTheGripsUpToTheAttic (133) 13 years ago

Again, there is no SURE way for the police to leak documents/information from inside this repressive operation. W-T-F??. They can't help us, even if they were DYING to do so. W-T-F??

It's UNDENIABLE that leaked information from within crackdown will be more important than our blind-ass guesses.

Make sure these "99%" policeman know how to SAFELY leak info. when they get near the park.

DON'T create the situation where Bloomberg can send in the muscle, with NO penalty. Hold up signs. Or pass out pamphlets to any New Yorker about leaking inside info. on this crackdown.

[-] 1 points by ImpeachBloomberg (5) 13 years ago

Impeach Bloomberg. It's a goal, a worthwhile strategy, and he deserves it. It can be done before the next election. He needs to be on the defensive, he is a billionaire, and he has undermined an election with his money. This should be goal # 1, let's figure out how to do it.

[-] 1 points by Elysium22 (95) 13 years ago

Lets say they get scared and start moving on population centers martial law etc. where can the people go to regroup and rally

[-] 1 points by therising (6643) 13 years ago

They can't so that anymore because we have more cameras and media outlets. They need the public behind them. That used to be easy. Not any more. The tables have turned.

[-] 1 points by Elysium22 (95) 13 years ago

Its just im scared.Ive read books on big government and the means they will go to so that they quell rebellions. I know we are not in rebellion we are in revolution for change. But to them with the money im sure it means the same thing. How secure are we on the internet and do we have a fallback plan should they just start using kill-switches on our outlets.Dear god we live in a police state i shouldn't even have to be scared.

PS - To paraphrase James Baldwin: We may not know the precise shape of our future, but we know that it belongs to us.

Full quote: "The representatives of the status quo are sickened and divided and dread looking into the eyes of their young; while the excluded begin to realize, having endured everything, that they CAN endure everything. They do not know the precise shape of their future but they know that the future belongs to them. They realize this -- paradoxically -- by the failure of moral energy of their oppressors and begin, almost instinctively, to forge a new morality, to create the principles on which a new world will be built."

[-] 1 points by therising (6643) 13 years ago

Holy lack of punctuation Batman. But to your point...OWS is NOT democratic or republican. We are the 99% who have been getting the shaft from the 1% for too long. And you are a part of the 99%. Once we all wake up to realize this, we have the power. That's a quick revolution. Suddenly we're making decisions from a position of unity and strength rather than making demands from a position of division and weakness. Let the 1% set up tents in parks and make demands. We'll bring them food and sleeping bags. :)

PS - Feels good to say that word doesn't it? Revolution.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: One of the main pillars of Conservative propaganda is that both parties are the same. Nothing they say is further from the truth. It is an insidious lie intended to demoralize progressives, and discourage them from voting. Do not fall for this canard, because if both parties are the same, there is no hope for change, and therefore no reason to vote. The truth is that there is a difference between the parties. A stark difference! One party works for the rich, the other party works for all Americans. One party takes money from the needy to feed the greedy, and the other party takes money from the greedy to feed the needy. One party has plans and policies to create jobs, and the other party has a long list of lame excuses for not doing anything. Liberals want to change things. Conservatives want things to stay the same. There is a difference. One party wants to tax the rich, and the other party wants to tax the poor. One party wants to destroy Unions, and the other party wants to support them. One party supports the Occupation of Wall Street, and the other party doesn’t. One party wants to rebuild America, and the other party doesn’t. One party wants to provide health care for all, and the other party doesn’t. One party wants to regulate Wall Street, and the other party doesn’t. One Party wants to end the wars; the other party wants them to go on forever. There is a difference. One party is Myopic, and the other party is Far Sighted. One party wants to help the Middle Class, and the other party is at war with the Middle Class. One party wants to fire Teachers, and the other party wants to hire them. One party wants to create more jobs in America, and the other party wants to create more jobs in Asia. There is a difference. One party wants to protect pensions, and the other party wants to loot them. One party has a heart, and the other party has Ann Coulter. One party protects the right bear Arms, and the other party protects the right of freedom of assembly. One party believes that the only role for the Government is to provide for the common defense, and the other party believes that the Government should also promote the general Welfare. There is a difference, and anybody that tells you there is no difference between the parties is simply not conversant with reality. In addition, anyone that blames the Democrats for the current state of affairs has no understanding of who controls the Government. One Party has the Presidency, and the other party has the Majority in the House, controls the Senate, has a majority on the Supreme Court, and is responsible for current economic policy. So, if you’re angry, and you want to start a real fight, I submit that we should start a real fight with the Conservatives! America has a Two Party System. One party is clearly on your side, the other party thinks you’re and Anti-American mob. At some point in time you’re going to have to pick one. Choose wisely, your future is at stake

[-] 1 points by therising (6643) 13 years ago

There you go again acting as an apologist for big corporations and rich people who use you to keep from paying their fair share of taxes. Eegads man. Read a book by an author other than Ayn Rand.

[-] 1 points by goeib1 (163) 13 years ago

I don't go any higher than Gary Larson..... I want to know why it is "fair" to keep taking in the name of government and all is good in the world but if a corporation actually gets you to pay them for something and they make obscene profits, it is evil and wrong. THIS MAKES NO SENSE!

[-] 1 points by therising (6643) 13 years ago

Oh dear. We're going to have to go all the way back to freshman year here apparently. Dude. They're using you. You are not one of the 1%. You never will be. So give it up. Stop defending them. See the award winning documentary inside job. It'll give you a semester's worth of learnin'.

[-] 1 points by goeib1 (163) 13 years ago

Well, please tell me why your government is all knowing and good and deserves more than the current TRILLION in income taxes (not even all the rest). I am Happy to not be part of the 1% (occupiers). You all denigrate corporations while eating big macs, texting on iphones, or driving somewhere in your car. Oh, but the OUTRAGEOUS CEO salaries you all whine. I don't bitch if you are a union janitor making 60K a year with a pension but that is just as outrageous. I have not heard a peep out of you about the Union leadership that sucks and sucks and is more corrupt than ANY corporation you can name.

[-] 1 points by therising (6643) 13 years ago

Actually you've heard lots of peeps about that from people in the movement, right or wrong. But here's the point. What common ground do you and I have. You keep focusing on what separates us. How do we find common ground?

[-] 1 points by goeib1 (163) 13 years ago

Tried that already over the past 1 1/2 weeks. That is most of the problem, your "movement" does not have ANY kind of organized, reasoned purpose to disseminate to the 99% (sorry, you all are NOT the 99%) of the population looking in. And, yes, I have read many of the demands/ requests floating around. Common ground would be first realizing that the government is the entity that should be on the receiving end of this protest. It is SO easy to say the RICH are our problems or EVIL CORPORATIONS are our problem, but what is truly driving some "demands" (impossible to address all) of this "movement" is the pervasive US government and it's pervasive intrusion into lives and businesses. I do see SOME with a peripheral understanding of this but very few. The whole basis of what is going on is wrong as far as I am concerned.

[-] 1 points by therising (6643) 13 years ago

Government isn't intruding into business enough. I'm saying that and I have owned a company for 14 years. I employ 20 people. We need more guardrails for all the corporate assholes out there who would steel their grandmother's last dime, pollute the stream their kids play in and let a poor man in their town without health insurance die (and then cheer about it).
