That sounds like logical reasoning--on the surface. But it is the system that is screwed up and no longer beneficial to us, not one candidate or the other. By not voting we would not be passive, we would be making a statement that we don't agree with the government and economic structure and that we refuse to play that game anymore. Silence in itself would then be a vote. There are much more important things to do with our time that could have a real impact on the citizens of the world. We can't keep blaming one particular person or espousing the virtues of another and expect our needs to be met because whoever is voted in cannot affect real change under the current system. Here are some more ideas that pertain to this issue: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PNRVRbpJMP0

This is all well and good but at the end of the day an idea is only as meaningful as the corresponding attempts to implement it, and voting is the simplest and easiest way to do so. If you can't find a candidate among the two main parties that interests you, write in someone who shares your values. Hell, if you want to communicate your distaste for the system write in Piggasus or something like that. Silence doesn't equal principle, it merely equals passivity.
