Forum Post: Maybe a small change in the law but it can help

Right out of college I worked for a local group of convenience stores that have delis in them and serve some hot food from steam tables. We would throw out a ton of food every day (steam table, cold cuts, bagels, etc) and weren't allowed to do anything else with it.

If we could remove the law prohibiting this food's reuse we could set up some collection and delivery system to help feed they hungry and these small businesses could save money by having less garbage and maybe even get a tax write off for donated goods (of course at a much reduced value than they would sell it for - maybe 1/10th?). This seems like a win-win-win idea that helps us reduce wasteful actions.

I extremely support this. I worked for Dunkin' Donuts for a while and am upset that donating their food was considered illegal. While donuts aren't necessarily the most healthy of foods, we would throw away 100s a day at just the one store I worked at. Thinking about all the food waste in America makes me not hungry anymore.

That's a good idea. Its ideas like that that actually help. Thank you for contributing instead of just being angry.
