Since the 1960s, millions of working class people have defected, contrary to their own self interest, to conservatism and the Republican Party. Why? Abortion, gay rights and the the 2nd Amendment.
What is the liberal/progressive loyalty litmus test? Abortion, gay rights and the the 2nd Amendment.
If those three issues went away tomorrow, conservatism would whither and die. If they'd never existed, working class people would never have turned so red in the first place.
We don't have to abandon women, gays and firearm sanity. But if we want to win once and for all, we'd do well to avoid talking so much about the issues that so easily impede the progress necessary to assure the survival of the human race.
Social conservatism is not the same thing as economic conservatism and this is where people get mixed up.
You can be socially conservative, homophobic, xenophobic, gun loving, and yet still fight like hell for a living wage, Medicare for All, and decent working conditions!
"Liberals" need to learn to separate out the two things. All of these issues are important to your typical "liberal" but many who are "socially conservative" can be won over to the economically progressive side of things" is the truth of it.
This is where I think Bernie Sanders could do very well at bringing over many of Trump's supporters.
