JANUS FORUM - Should the U.S. legalize drugs? Glenn Greenwald debates former Bush drug czar John Walters at Brown University
I'm a huge Glenn Greenwald fangirl and hugely not a fan of the Drug War.
I haven't watched the video, I'm listening to it now.
I'm sure Glenn is gonna kick ass.
The war on drugs has been just as effective as the war on terror.
Meaning not at all.
Google how crack started with Manuel Noriega
re: vid - finally finally: another human has brought in the concept of the privatization of torture chamber, gang rape prisons as a major factor in their promotion & perpetuation. Never underestimate what humans will do in the way of systematic cruelty for (fun) & profit, they are pros at this.
Keeping prisons under control can entail creating an influx of nonviolent drug offenders - people who will quickly be assaulted & turned out. Used as pacifying elements, in the way of a ready supply of rape-able 'punks' - to keep our US torture chambers more manageable.
Plus: judiciary on all levels - police,DA's,detectives, judges - don't they tend to get promoted via how many 'trophies' they hang on their wall (?). Why not use easily busted, nonviolent drug offenders as jail fodder & resume padders? Makes upward mobility easier, less hazardous...for those who get by in this terrible manner. Not so good for the rest of our populace.
What is it with humans anyway, that promotes their already outstandingly developed tropism towards calculated cruelty? Is Jane Goodall out there with some possible answers? (no kidding, I'd love the answer to that one...)
powertoo: I think I take an even dimmer view of this endless debacle than you do.. (?) But thanks, thanks for contributing this vid..
Yes - careerism in the criminal justice system is a big problem.
Started with the younger boomers & gen x-ers "anything for success" so-called yuppie striver mentality.
More thoughts later. Glad you watched.
I wish people would discriminate between compellingly physically addictive hard drugs (usually dealt w the intention of keeping people captive & enslaved) & awareness enhancing things like pot, hash, even psychedelics. These are not necessarily things which result in a stupefied population @ all. They've been known to be quite a crucible of activism, as they (can) make people more sensitive to humanity's problems, as opposed to degrees of unawareness.
Legalization should begin with complete legalization of marijuana.

America has 5% of the worlds population yet 25% of the worlds imprisoned population with a VAST majority in for trumped up drug charges.
RON PA UL FOR PRESIDENT!
Legalize? No. There's a big enough drug problem. I fully support the idea that drugs have no real benefit. Intelligent people seem to be the victim: http://blogs.wsj.com/ideas-market/2011/11/16/high-iq-in-childhood-correlates-with-adult-drug-use/
It's easy to dismantle a movement funded by intelligent people, when you can get them all addicted to drugs easily.
Decriminalize? Absolutely. And put "addiction" in the medical dictionary as a treatable illness; perspiration drugs to alleviate symptoms and eventually treat.
Keep quality and relevance on top.
The government will start selling drugs to make money just like smokes
Anyone genuinely interested should check this video out.
I'm on to the audience participation now, the audience is as illuminating as the speakers.
Agree!
