lets take 2 or 3 big companies for now and break their financial back the same way their breaking ours. how about we all not buy a television or a kitchen appliance or a new cell phone or a new car... for the next 2 years Im sure we can live with that if we really tried to, I think they'll get the message and we'll see some jobs coming home pretty quick! Hey, with 74% of the population in step with this message it'll get the support to send the message we need to send. while we're at it lets stop buying these damn toyotas and all this poison from china !

How about a Black Friday boycott and general strike and then extend it for a Christmas boycott?

Boycotts never work.

wow you guys chant that you work hard at protesting and that you would never give up outside wall street. clearly you aren't as good as you claim.

I think you're overestimating the size of the movement. It doesn't have the power to sway big corporations like that.

Also are you even aware that there are 5 toyota manufacturing facilities in the USA? and another one scheduled to be done this year? They provide plenty of jobs for US workers.

Agree

toyota is a foreign corporation so the money all goes back to japan, the fact that they employ a few thousand people doesnt compare...regarding the power to sway corporate decisions, what sways corporate decisions is decreased revenue and shareholder outrage resulting in lower stock price because their dumping their shares.... ....your mindset is exactly the problem, the movements strength is proof that theres power here, dont UNDERestimate it!

You are 100% correct splasher. Despite these naysayers that responded to you here, boycotts do indeed work IF you get enough people to go along. The problem in this country are there are far too many people like puff6962 and Apercentage in this country that aren't willing to try. We've been making a little headway on this forum in regards to boycotts but still have a long way to go. Eventually, we can get enough on board with the help of people that don't easily get discouraged and give up. I'm already boycotting, as well as some others on this site. We welcome you to join us. For the record, I've been boycotting Wal-Mart and McDonalds for years because of the things they've done and recently added anything made in China to my list. Someone on this site a couple weeks ago said he was compiling a list of the corporations that have committed the worst ethics violations so we could have a boycott list. I'm anxious to see what he comes up with. For a small sampling of why I think you should boycott Wal-Mart, read this:

Anybody in the US can buy stock in Toyota and profit.

And where on earth did you get that 74% figure from?

[-] 0 points by OWSCityHall (12) 13 years ago

I don't think that will work, especially at this time of the year. You might find this hard to believe, but most of the people don't agree with the protest. They think OWS is a bunch of stupid, unemployed hippies. At least most of the people I talk to say that.

These politicians that are supporting OWS are in for a big surprise next time they come up for reelection.

The majority of people sure as heck aren't going to boycott companies because OWS says so.

While I agree that a Boycott won't work an is probably a waste of time, I fail to understand how you think the current system which basically has politicians bought and paid for is a good system?

[-] 1 points by Apercentage (81) 13 years ago

Its just an inherent part of polotics. Its been that way since we've started governing ourselves, and will continue to be so. You might say that this can change, but come on, lets be realistic, peoples opinions will always be swayed with some cash.

[-] 1 points by Jonas541 (72) 13 years ago

The question is, is this a good thing? Are politicians that don't represent us a good thing? I don't buy the "it's always been this way" as a valid argument. Just because it has always been doesn't mean it always has to be.

[-] 1 points by Apercentage (81) 13 years ago

No of course its not a good thing. But is it a thing we can change? Sadly no, I'm all for big money getting out of politics, but you can always bribe someone. And no matter how many restrictions we put on private donations through lobbyists, superpacs, just writing checks, etc, there will always be a way to get money to sway politicians. But this time around it will just be diriter, and better hidden than it is now.

Changing this, would need a whole flip flop in human nature. Yea it would be amazing if such a thing could change, but realistically... will it ever?

I don't know but I think that is a worthwhile aspiration even if it isn't a possibility.
